Upcoming workshops and events
Join us for our upcoming Data Science for Social Good happy hour, held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 26, in the WRF Data Science Studio.

Co-Executive Director Sarah Stone will speak at the free Intelligent Data Tech Symposium on Tuesday, July 24, from 1 to 7:30 p.m. on the Seattle campus. Speakers from leading platform developers and startups will focus on data science, AI, data management and machine learning.

Bernease Herman, data scientist, will present at the upcoming Seattle PyLadies MeetUp Talk Night on "Computational approaches to ethical AI and data science" , Wednesday, Aug. 1 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Zonar Systems.
Research Feature
A new citizen science-based research project led by Anthony Arendt, senior research scientist, Landung (Don) Setiawan, research scientist, and others, is helping scientists to check the accuracy of regional snow datasets and model simulations supported by a variety of NASA Earth Observing Programs. Artificial intelligence
Bill Howe, founding associate director and senior data science fellow, presented a paper at the International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence this week on work by his former student Maxim Grechkin (Facebook), collaborator Hoifung Poon (Microsoft Research) and himself titled "EZLearn: exploiting organic supervision in automated data annotation."  The algorithm was used to automatically curate gene expression data as well as label millions of figures in the scientific literature.

Kari Stephens, data science fellow, will present a lecture on "Data sharing with real world primary care practices" at the Translational Research and Information Lab, Friday, July 27, from 1 to 2:30 p.m.
Emma Spiro, data science fellow, visiting scholar Zack Almquist, and PhD candidate Li Zeng received the Best Paper Award for the 10th International Conference on Social Computing and Social Media in the context of the Human-Computer Interaction International Conference.
Congratulations to Dr. Anissa Tanweer, who this week successfully defended her doctoral dissertation "Sense-making and scaling in data science of the social: how the field is responding to ethical crisis and spreading across sectors".
Travel award
