Upcoming workshops and events
The Studio will close at 2 p.m. today (Friday, Sept. 1), and will be closed all day on Monday, Sept. 4, for Labor Day.

Neurohackweek, a five-day, hands-on workshop in neuroimaging and data science, will run from Sept. 4 - 8 on the Seattle campus.
Data Science for Social Good

Panel discussion
Register now to attend the "The information war: fake news, privacy and big data" panel discussion featuring Jevin West, data science fellow, Kate Starbird, affiliate, and Ryan Calo (law), and moderated by Bill Howe, senior data science fellow. This event is hosted by the UW Master of Science in Data Science program in partnership with Professional and Continuing Education and the eScience Institute.
In the news
Brittany Fiore-Gartland, director of data science ethnography, and collaborators organized a panel on studying data critically at the annual meeting of the Society for Social Studies of Science, where she also gave three data studies talks. Anissa Tanweer, postdoctoral fellow, was a co-speaker for one of the talks. Fiore-Gartland also gave a talk at JupyterCon this week.

Ariel Rokem, data scientist, has co-authored two new pre-prints: "AFQ-Browser: Supporting reproducible human neuroscience research through browser-based visualization tools" on bioRxiv, and "The practice of reproducible research" on The Center for Open Science, with Valentina Staneva, senior data scientist, and Ben Marwick, data science fellow. 

Jevin West was interviewed on King 5 News in their piece "The odds of winning the lottery".

Noah Smith, senior data science fellow, and his team are finalists in Amazon's Alexa Prize, an artificial intelligence competition. Learn more on KIRO 7 and Xconomy.
Vikram Jandhyala, affiliate, wrote a piece in Xconomy titled "Taking tech ideas global: connecting an innovation ecosystem".
