SEPTEMBER 2017

Connecting with our Motherland

ANBU in the Homeland

Connecting with dedicated change-makers, hearing the stories of incredibly resilient communities, and being amazed by the strength and ambition of people who keep surviving and thriving in the face of adversity. That could sum up the experience of two of ANBU’s own, Cheyanne and Shajini, when they visited Sri Lanka this August.

The two were a part of team of volunteers who went to see the current conditions in Northern and Eastern Sri Lanka. We all hear stories of the homeland from diaspora who visit the island, especially after the end of the war. But there’s nothing like seeing for yourself…and speaking to the communities who still experience the effects of decades of violence. Community members had lots to share…issues ranging from mental health to quality of education to water availability. The team’s Needs Assessment will hopefully provide a knowledge base for future projects geared toward helping the North and East find sustainable solutions for the many issues people face.
Cheyanne and Shajini also met with LEADS, an organization based in Colombo that supports survivors of childhood sexual abuse. They got a tour of the head office, met with the CEO and staff members, and heard about what LEADS does as well as the hurdles they face while doing their amazing work. For ANBU’s Women’s Day event in March, we had paintings made for the kids supported by LEADS. These were passed on to the organization during a weekend event for the children.

This is just the beginning of ANBU’s involvement in giving back to the homeland. We’re excited to see our partnerships blossom and support wonderful work!
Inspired by the love at LEADS and their commitment to our children, our future generation! Our video this month is on Raising Sexually Healthy Children (in Tamil).
Stay tuned for Part Two!

It's all go in September for ANBU UK. Our immediate focus is to engage with the London Tamil community initially, raising awareness on childhood sexual abuse, whilst busily sorting out all the mechanics involved in getting a charity set up!

We have launched an ANBU UK newsletter which will be going out to university Tamil societies over freshers week (which will also be posted on our website and social media spaces) and we're also in the middle of filming a short clip to introduce the team virtually! It should be ready by next month, however take a sneaky peek at some pictures from the filming.
Next training session:
