Happy Monday, I hope everyone had an enjoyable Thanksgiving break. Here are a bunch of interesting links to peruse during the coming leftover-induced food comas.

For those who might be wondering why you haven’t received an email from me in a while, it appears MailChimp makes it hard for GMail addresses to avoid the spam filters, so I’ve changed to a new domain that hopefully helps these reach your inboxes as intended! Thanks to those who noticed and let me know, and for those who have been missing out, the most recent previous CoolNews are always available here although there is a limit to the backlog.  On to the links:

🚀⛈ NASA

Behind the Scenes as NASA tests the Most Powerful Rocket Ever — Great article and photos on the intense modeling and scale testing done for the Space Launch System scheduled to blast off in 2019.  NASA is also working on airless tires made instead of woven high-strain metal to navigate the sharp and rocky surface of Mars and made this cool visualization of atmospheric particle movements throughout the 2017 hurricane season.

🏡🏗 Unique Buildings

This “Plantscraper”being built in Sweden is a huge indoor farm that will provide food for 5000+ people a year as well as usable office space.  A similar building in Cairo is designed to be more multi-use with living and retail spaces incorporated into nine “mega-trees” of giant plant covered structures.   This concept for embedding LEDs within crosswalks enables smart communications between drivers and pedestrians could easily be extended to provide seamless blending between buildings and their surroundings as well.

The eight-year construction of the Louvre Abu Dhabi condensed into a 3 minute timelapse.

😮🤔 Cool Videos

Gravity is Overrated | Weightless” — A jealousy-inducing short film of a paraglider coasting across various landscapes around the world.

Amazing microscopic visualizations of Your Amazing Molecular Machines going about rapid and precise operations within every cell.

An art critic’s review of Leonardo da Vinci’s Salvator Mundi, which recently sold for a record breaking $450M.

In anticipation of the upcoming ski season, meet the artist who hand-paints many of the trail maps in a useful way based off of aerial shots.

Finally, a great old-timey breakdown of how mechanical watches work and the various internal components.

Until next time,
Kendall
