TOBACCO: Take Care, Not Tobacco (feat. Ava Michelle)
DoSomething.org partnered with actress and dancer Ava Michelle, star of the Netflix movie Tall Girl. Michelle appears in a conversation-style PSA where she is introduced to issues that intersect with tobacco use, including mental health, predatory marketing towards youth and the environment. “Through this program, I’ve learned that nicotine and tobacco use impact more than just your physical health. It affects many of the causes I’m passionate about, and that’s why I’m grateful to have the opportunity to help increase awareness amongst my peers and the greater community,” says Ava.
ALCOHOL: Hidden Risk Factor
There is a hidden risk factor in our community that flies under the radar and contributes to underage binge drinking. Misperceptions! The pressures to drink or smoke are real, but the beliefs behind them are misleading. Findings from the Minnesota Student Survey in 2019 show that nearly 75 percent of 8th, 9th, and 11th grade students never drink, yet just 25 percent of students think most never drink. Friends are so influential and so are the beliefs that they hold. Students who believe that most of their peers currently drink alcohol are 4.2 times more likely to binge drink. Friends can also be a protective factor. Students who have friends that think it is wrong/very wrong to consume alcohol nearly every day are 3.9 times less likely to binge drink. The fact is most students do not drink alcohol, and there is a lot of freedom in that.
SUPPORT: LGBTQ+ Youth and Allies Group
Hosted by the Manitou Center, this group provides a safe environment for LGBTQ+ youth and allies to discuss and explore relevant topics. The group will meet once a week (4 sessions) for 60 minutes, via Zoom. Held on Wednesdays: Aug. 4, 11, 18, 25 from 1:00-2:00pm. Ages 13-17.
POLICY: Drink Local Economic Recovery Package
It appears this proposed legislation in Minnesota did not move far through the legislative session. Senate File (SF) 1176 & House File (HF) 1192 would permanently allow alcohol to-go, lift the growler cap on breweries, allow liquor stores & restaurants to fill growlers to-go, and update alcohol tax laws.
