Top 5 Electric Vehicle stories of the week

1. TESLA made a controversial offer to acquire Solar City in a $2.8Bln transaction. The transaction, if going ahead will create a vertically integrated green energy company. Elon Musk holds 20% shares in both companies and recused himself from voting. WattEV2Buy wonders how the transaction would influence BMW and Solar City's partnership agreement.
2. BMW announced that it will follow Daimler, Nissan and Tesla in creating second life energy storage systems for residential and commercial use. Second life battery systems would not have the same warranties as new systems. The advantages include lower replacement cost of battery packs and less recycling associated cost to the environment.
3. MERCEDES BENZ contemplates creating an alternative brand to house it's electric vehicle models in. According to the German business publication the announcement would be made in September.
4. AUDI to challenge Tesla in the race to be the lead in the electric vehicle sector. Audi hopes to leverage it's mass production expertise to trump Tesla. Mass production has been Elon Musk's achilles heel up to now.
5. According to a New York Times article 75% of EV and PHEV owners that traded in the their vehicles in 2016 to date replaced it with gas guzzlers. The low fuel prices was sited as the driver behind this trend.
