Seize the opportunity to get involved!

Welcome to this, the first ever Legion Bulletin, your direct feed into the worlds of the Human Legion. If you’re a regular over at humanlegion.com you’ll already know that we’re taking a short break before restarting work on the conclusion to the main Human Legion series later this year. We’re going to be far from idle, though, because before the end of the year we will launch at least six new books, two of which will initially be only be available for signed up Legionaries.

You, in other words.

The first of these launches will be in the new ‘Sleeping Legion’ series of novels, written by JR Handley. If you’ve read Human Empire, the fourth Human Legion book, you may remember Colonel Nhlappo ordered a quick exit from Tranquility for some characters. The Sleeping Legion series will pick up the tale of what happened next for those stranded on the planet’s surface, although the first book takes us back in time, to before the events of Marine Cadet.

In The Legion Awakes, JR Handley shows us life in the Human Marine Corps through the eyes of Sergeant Lance Scipio, a soldier caught out of time and place, and having to prove himself to his brutal alien officers and to his fellow humans. The penalty for failure is death.

Hold on a moment!

That was beginning to sound like a sales pitch, but I’m forgetting whom I’m addressing here. Forgive me! You’re signed up Legionaries and I already know you will enjoy these books. What’s more, I invite you to get directly involved.

Many of you have helped out with Legion recon teams before, helping to shape the books with your advice.

The team of legionaries has grown since then and so this time we’re going to trial something different, something on a bigger scale. Here’s how it works:

Keep watching for the Legion Bulletin. The next edition will have download links for the recon team edition of The Legion Awakes. We’re setting up an account with a service provider who will make it super easy to get the books up and running on your device and will provide tech support in case you get stuck.

To make it easier to discuss the recon edition books, today we introduce ‘BattleNet’, our humanlegion.com forums. There will be a forum dedicated to discussing the recon team edition of all new books. Some forums will be public access, but to get on the recon team forums you will need a password. You can register for a BattleNet account in any of the forums. To find BattleNet, you can click on the main website menu (the box of horizontal lines at the top right) or follow this link: https://humanlegion.com/battlenet/

You don’t have to get involved, of course. Not everyone wants to and I know myself that sometimes I would like to get involved with beta teams for other books but the timing just isn’t convenient. But if you do get involved and contribute to the recon teams then we will publicly thank you by name in the book credits and put your name into the Redshirt Pool (unless you ask us not to).

Do you want to feel the moisture in your eyes boil when you’re shoved out the airlock into space, or watch helplessly from a dusty corner of your mind as alien parasites take over your body? No, me neither. But as a Redshirt, we’ll take some of your name, possibly mangle it a little if it suits the story better, assign it to a character and then do something horrible to them in one of the novels. Or something wonderful. Maybe you’ll be a hero. Nice things happen to redshirts too. Honestly.

We will kick off the launch of the Sleeping Legion series with three books: two novels and a prequel novella. You can read the prequel before book1 or the other way around. Both work well. And we’ll be starting a recon team for the novella straight after we’ve set things up for book1.

You might have noticed that in the text above I’ve written ‘we’ rather than ‘I’. That’s because I have editors, artists, co-authors, beta and recon team members. It’s a team effort.  And then, of course, there is J. R. Handley.

Most of you haven’t read anything by J.R. Handley yet, so here’s a reminder of who this is.

J. R. Handley is a pseudonym for a husband and wife writing team.  He is a veteran infantry sergeant with the 101st Airborne Division and the 28th Infantry Division.  She is the kind of crazy that interprets his insanity into cogent English.  He writes the sci-fi while she proofreads it.  The sergeant is a two-time combat veteran of the late unpleasantness in Mesopotamia where he was wounded, likely doing something stupid.  He started writing military science fiction as part of a therapy program suggested by his doctor, and hopes to entertain you while he attempts to excise his demons through these creative endeavors.  In addition to being just another dysfunctional veteran, he is a stay at home wife, avid reader and all around nerd.  Luckily for him, his Queen joins him in his fandom nerdalitry.

“My name is Veteran Sergeant Scipio, you may call me Sergeant Scipio or Sergeant but I will shoot the next frakker that calls me ‘sarge’. Is that clear?”
“I’m NJ McCall, and I’m not here about justice. Been there, already done that. I’ve come to deliver revenge.”
The other series coming out this year is Revenge Squad. If you can imagine Jim Butcher’s The Dresden Files, and relocate Harry Dresden to the worlds of the Human Legion, then you’re in the right ballpark. The first book is with the editor now. We will launch with book 1 and book 2 but also a novella that slots between the two that will be exclusive to Legionary subscribers. I’ve roughed out the novella and started writing it in earnest this week. I can’t wait to get to work each day. Writing this series is a blast!

That’s it for the first Bulletin. Remember, if you want to die a gruesome death as a Redshirt, can’t wait to read books early, or want to help out and shape books then watch out for the next edition of the Bulletin which will give links for the recon edition of the first J.R. Handley book.

Best wishes,
Tim C. Taylor

P.S. Simon Glovebox hailing from the land of Gmail, and Thomas of Comcast (possibly in the San Diego area), please get in touch because you’ve won signed audiobooks on CD and I don’t think you’ve noticed my emails :-)
