Hendricks Families:

Happy Fall! The school year is off to great start with many PTA programs underway. I'd like to begin by thanking Hendricks families for supporting PTA. We reached 100% membership for the 46th year. Before I became a Hendricks parent, I was always told that the "Parent Involvement" is what makes Hendricks so unique and I'm thrilled to be able to see it first hand.

I'd like to offer another thank you to those who supported the annual Fall Fundraiser. Students enjoyed seeing Chompers travel around campus from the morning news to the front office! Profits from this event directly fund all PTA programs for the year. Over the next few weeks, we will announce the top sellers, as well as product delivery dates.

Be sure to mark your calendars for Family Fitness Night on October 4th from 6:00 p.m.-7:30 p.m. Please join our school community for a fun evening filled with drums alive, soccer, bowling, gymnastics, obstacles course, dance and other fun activities.

National Walk to School Day follows on October 5th. Be on the lookout for our own HAE parent Mayor Lenny Curry walking his family to school. PTA will provide water stations at both the front and rear of the school.

Please be sure to like the Hendricks PTA Facebook page. Here you can stay up to date on Hendricks happenings and enjoy the Staff Spotlights on Tuesdays.

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions regarding PTA.

Attendance and Tracking

We are looking forward to a successful year of attendance for all students.  A reminder that attendance is taken electronically each day and all absences, days tardy and early checkouts are being monitored by the county. If the county feels that a student's attendance is a concern, they will send us a list of names to schedule an Attendance Intervention Meeting with a Duval County Representative. When meeting the parent/guardian will sign a contract to agree to improve whatever concerns the county notes about attendance.  Should attendance continue to be an issue, the parent/guardian's name will be sent to the State's Attorney's Office where you will then have to meet with them.

Please assist us by having your child arrive by the first bell which is at 8:25 a.m.  The second bell is at 8:30 a.m.  Students arriving after that time are considered tardy and will need to come to the front office for a late slip.

Please read the information below which has been copied from the Duval County website.

Attendance and Tardies at School

According to the Florida compulsory school attendance law, Florida Statute 232.01, regular school attendance is required between the ages of 6 years and 16 years of age.  It is the parent/guardian’s responsibility to contact the school if their child will be absent and to state the reason for the absence.  Students returning to school from an absence are required to present a written explanatory excuse from their parent(s) or legal guardian stating the cause for the absence.  The following causes are acceptable excuses for being absent: (1) illness or injury of the student; (2) serious illness or death in the student’s family; (3) inclement weather; (4) official religious holiday; (5) a bus failure or schedule which causes the absence.

A physician’s note is needed when (1) the student has been absent for 8 or more consecutive days, (2) has had surgery, (3) is returning to school after hospitalization, (4) has been under the doctor’s care for a significant illness, or (5) is returning to school after being excluded because of a communicable disease.

A student with 5 unexcused absences within a calendar month or 10 unexcused absences within a 90-calendar day period shall be referred to the Attendance Intervention Team.  A referral will be made to the Truancy Officer if the attendance problem is not resolved.

Days Tardy

Students will not be recognized by the School for perfect attendance when they have three or more unexcused tardies or three or more unexcused early check outs.

Six (6) unexcused tardies or six (6) early check outs in any forty five (45) day grading period will result in the student and their parents being referred for the following interventions:

   - referral to the Attendance Intervention Team

   - at the principal’s discretion, assignment to Saturday School as detailed in the Student Code of Conduct.

If it is determined that the parent is the cause of the chronic tardiness or early check out without an acceptable excuse, then a referral shall be made to the State Attorney’s Office.

For the purposes of this policy, tardiness and early check out without an acceptable excuse are seen as a violation of 1003.21 F.S. (compulsory attendance).

Thank you.  Vicki VanGundy M.Ed.
