At the River News 2021, Issue #1

Greetings everyone! 

I am happy to announce a new book for ESL literacy students: In Town. It is a collection of 12 stories designed for adolescent and adult students who have completed At the River and At the Lake. Students will increase their reading fluency with longer stories, made up of common sight words and spelling patterns they know. In Town is the first in a series of readers for beginners. 

There are new characters: The Mendez family and the Yousef family. Their storylines tie in with characters and places from At the Lake. The characters experience everyday situations that are relevant for beginner ESL students.

Sample Lesson Plan for In Town
 
Students will be able to
Increase reading fluency and use accurate pronunciation
Demonstrate comprehension of the story
Connect their own lives to the characters' situations

1. Introduce story topic and key vocabulary through visuals and/or realia
2. Students read the story silently
3. Teacher reads aloud while students follow along
4. Teacher reads a chunk of the story, and students echo read, or 
5. Teacher leads students in choral reading
6. Pause to ask simple comprehension questions (who, what, when, where, how, why)
7. Students read in pairs or threes
8. Review pronunciation for words they struggled with
9. Optional: mini-lesson on short/long vowel spelling patterns from the story, or word families
10. Optional: Students rehearse and act out conversations in the story
11. Final reading options: Students read in groups again. Or, do a round robin reading. Or, students record themselves reading the story. 
12. Ask reflection questions such as: Who are the people/characters in the story? Where are they/what is the setting? What do the characters want or need? What is the problem in the story? How will they solve the problem? What will happen next? Have you experienced this situation? What did you do?
