Keep it Up!

"We cannot pray at all times if we do not pray at specific times."
-Catechism 2609

Its been about a month since we introduced the 1% Challenge, and since rolling it out, we've heard inspiring stories about how daily, quiet, intentional and uninterrupted time with God has already impacted many lives.  However, if you're struggling right now to make the time know that you're not alone. It is totally normal to struggle with the Challenge, especially at first,  but when it happens it's natural for people to try and take a short-cut--don't do this!  For the 1% Challenge to be truly transformational, it needs to be done without outside distractions. Praying in the car, in the shower, at the office, etc. are wonderful places to pray, however those times cannot be a substitute for your 1%.  It's essential that the 15 minutes you spend be quiet, uninterrupted, intentional, and personal, free of any sort of distraction.

In the middle of our busy lives, it can be very difficult to start this habit of prayer, but I want to encourage you to keep going with it!  The small steps you're taking right now to grow in prayer are going to have a huge impact on your life if you continue to make them.  Change might not happen all at once, but it will happen! God loves you, and by taking time with him everyday in prayer you're making an effort to accept that love. It might be hard right now to afford this time, but don't give up! As St. Paul says in 1st Corinthians, "Run as to win". You can do it!

You're all in my prayers. Check out the rest of the E-mail for more tips, reminders, and an inspiring story we shared at Mass a few weeks ago.

God Bless,

Helpful Tip: Use a Devotional

There's no quick fix for the struggle of a wandering mind, even after lots of practice and time it can still be very challenging, however using a devotional book during prayer can be a great help and guide to getting started.  Books like Rediscover Jesus by Matthew Kelly, or Jesus Calling by Sarah Young are rooted in scripture, and help stimulate conversations with God by providing thoughtful reflections and solid questions to ponder in silence with Christ.

While using these books it's very tempting to spend your whole 15 minutes reading--don't do it! Just like you would with scripture, read your daily snippet, and then spend the rest of your time Reflecting, Responding, and Resting with God, just like it's outlined in the pamphlet.
