12th July 2016
Dear reader,

During the last couple of weeks, consortium members have put FERTINNOWA in the picture all over Europe. FERTINNOWA managed to gain the interest of not only growers, but also researchers, enterprises and policy makers.

Today, growers play a full part in the individual consultations during which they explain in great detail the bottlenecks they experience. The information we have collected so far seems to be extremely valuable. It will form the basis for the further actions of FERTINNOWA. Based on the growers’ experiences, FERTINNOWA will decide which technologies will be exchanged and which evaluations of innovative technologies will occur.
In the next few months, we will continue consulting growers but we would also like to involve other stakeholder groups such as enterprises, policy makers, researchers, ... to give them the opportunity to express their points of view.

In October 2016, FERTINNOWA invites you to join us during our first workshop "Meeting growers’ needs: optimal management of irrigation and fertigation".

This workshop provides the European horticulture sector-at-large a unique forum where producers, growers, academia, sector driven research and industry have the opportunity to interact, discuss and describe the growers’ needs for optimal management of irrigation and fertigation. Up to 150 participants are expected from all over Europe. You will find more information about this event at the bottom of this newsletter.

We hope to welcome you in October, but first enjoy reading our newsletter and certainly enjoy the upcoming holidays.

Executive Board visits Slovene farms

On Wednesday May 18, 2016 during the 7th Executive Board meeting in Maribor we visited growers implementing best practice of irrigation/fertigation systems in Slovenia at the area of Posavje,  which is  mostly a vegetable, strawberry, and apple production area  with a small area of vine nurseries.

In the morning, we visited the company Fruit Blanca Ltd. Which was established in 2000 and is associated with the company Evrosad Ltd. Plant. The total cultivated area of Fruit Blanca Ltd. is 107 ha and mainly consists of apples including 3 ha of pears. In the past, the Fruit Blanca Ltd. was drip irrigating 20 ha of apples in Loka near Zidani Most, next to the hydroelectric power plant Blanca.

The manager of the company, Jože Ratajc, introduced us the new fertigation system and we discuss the bottlenecks that he faces. The new fertigation system has the capacity to fertigate 81 ha of land including vegetable fields of neighbour growers in Arška.         Read more

Consultation highlights  bottlenecks for hydroponic culture of cucumber

In March 2016 a small group of Flemish and Dutch cucumber growers were asked about the bottlenecks and needs for new technologies to further evolve towards sustainable water use on their farms. It became clear that root exudates are really challenging in closed cucumber growing systems. A second point of interest is the continuous online monitoring of nutrient elements of the nutrient solution. The website has been developed as the basic information platform for interaction with key stakeholders. The website tells key stakeholders and the general public what FERTINNOWA is about. The FERTINNOWA website provides information on the project, the list of partners, updates on progress and results; it will also act as a gateway to other relevant projects. As a core element of the external communication strategy of FERTINNOWA project, the website is a dynamic environment to which information will be added as it becomes available.
