July Word of The Month
July’s word of the month is Church.
Commonly, especially here in the south, we are asked the question: are you a church-going person? Or, what church do you go to? The answers to these questions immediately implant opinions, right or wrong, about the state of the other man’s walk with Christ. Now, why is that the case? What makes church so important? Or, why do we even go to church? My goal for this month’s word is to answer some of these questions.
First, let’s define the word and differentiate between its two meanings. The Church, or universal Church, is God’s people from the beginning of time until the world’s culmination when Christ returns. Upon repentance and faith, God saves an individual to the Church and they are marked by the Holy Spirit, as it says in Ephesians 1:13-14: “In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.” Thus, upon salvation, a person joins the body of Christ.
I want to spend the rest of the time discussing the second meaning of the word. A church, or “local church, is a group of Christians who regularly gather in Christ’s name to officially affirm and oversee one another’s membership in Jesus Christ and his kingdom through gospel preaching and gospel ordinances (9Marks).” I want to break this definition down into bits and work through each part.
