Applying Credit to
Multiple Credentials

"Opportunities exist for students to transfer in a variety of directions: not just upwards, from one program to a different, higher-level program. This study focuses on situations where students seek to apply credits to multiple credentials that are *lateral or reverse."

This report looks at the issue of students applying credits to more than one credential in the pursuit of their educational and career goals. It contains a literature review, analysis of the current policies and practices at BC post-secondary institutions, insights from interviews with institutional personnel. It also offers recommendations on balancing credential flexibility and portability, while still maintaining the integrity of each credential.

*For example, a student with a marketing diploma seeking to earn another business diploma would be described as making "lateral" move, and one with a social work degree seeking to earn a certificate in addictions would be moving in a "reverse" direction.

Stepping Out Mid-Program

"Of the 21,590 students in the analysis cohort, just over 11% stepped out. Stepping out was more common for domestic than international students, and more common for female than male students."

This project explores the students’ practice of “stepping out” to earn transfer credits at a second or additional institution, while continuing in a program at their first institution. Based on the data from a cohort of students who graduated in 2015/2016 from 21 Central Data Warehouse (CDW) public institutions in BC, the "Stepping Out" report describes the trends and patterns of “stepping out” by program, credential, institution and transfer credit volume.
ARUCC Groningen
& Student Mobility Project

The ARUCC Groningen & Student Mobility Project is focused on developing a "National Network" for official, post-secondary documents and credentials to support national and international student mobility and transfer. This network will be designed for the Canadian context to "support official, permission-based document and data exchange (inbound and outbound) for learners seeking to enter, transfer between, and move beyond post-secondary institutions in Canada. Click here to view a recent project briefing paper.
