St. Paul's Epistle
Week of September 22- September 28, 2021

Pastor's Perspective

You Are God’s Firstfruits

Yesterday (September 21) was the first day of Fall.  That means it’s harvest season:  corn is being picked, wheat is being cut, and cotton is being picked.  Where I grew up, Fall was the “Black Friday” season for farmers.  Crops were harvested and sold and farmers had enough money to pay off debts from the growing season with some money to spare.  It was the farmer’s hope that the first fruits of the harvest paid the farmer’s debts and the remaining harvest was all profit.
There are many references to God’s harvest and firstfruits in the Bible.  The people of Israel offered firstfruit sacrifices during the Passover to celebrate God delivering them from the Angel of Death and from slavery in Egypt.  During the Feast of Weeks (Pentecost), the firstfruit of the Spring harvest was given as a sign of trust that God would make the rest of the harvest plentiful.  In the Fall, the people of Israel offered up firstfruit sacrifices in thanksgiving for God’s provision.
Many of our small groups are studying the Book of James this Fall, including mine.  James 1:18 says that WE are God’s firstfruit offering of creation.  God has redeemed humanity first through the sacrificial death and resurrection of Jesus as a sign of the promise to redeem all of creation when Jesus returns at His Second Coming.  Since we are the firstfruits of salvation, we can have hope in the fact that God will finish what He started and redeem all of creation when Jesus comes back.
Since we are God’s firstfruit offering to creation, we offer our firstfruits back to God in thanksgiving for all He has done for us.  Our firstfruit offerings include:
  1. Our worship – We offer our time to the LORD on the first day of the week in the first hours of the day in worship in church.  That means your worship is important and pleasing to God.
  2. Our service – We offer our talents and abilities as we use them in service to God and in service to others.  That means your service in ministries inside and outside the church are important and pleasing to God.
  3. Our finances – We offer the firstfruits of our labor – our money – to God in thanksgiving for all He has given us.  We also offer the first 10% of our labor as a sign of trust:  trusting that God will make the rest of our labor fruitful and profitable.  That means your financial giving to the church is important and pleasing to God.
As the Fall Stewardship season approaches, take some time and prayerfully take inventory of everything the Lord has done for you.  He has saved you, He has seen you through a very difficult season of life, and He will finish what He’s started.  Let’s finish 2021 strong.  Make worship, service, and giving a priority.  It is pleasing to the Lord Who has given us His Son because He loves us.  Thank You, Lord, for firstfruits!
