The Pastor's Perspective

Life, Death, and The Book of Ruth

I hope you are participating in our church-wide reading of the Old Testament book of Ruth and the accompanying daily devotion called The Ordinary Ways of God.  I’ve studied Ruth before, but I am gaining faith-building knowledge and insight from reading and studying it again.  The book of Ruth starts with death – A LOT of it.  Three of the main characters die in the first chapter.  But our extraordinary God acts on behalf of the remaining characters (Ruth, Naomi, and Boaz).  God saves them and blesses them and gives them new life.
Although the book of Ruth is found in the Old Testament, it is setting us up for the Gospels of the New Testament and the story of Jesus.  In the New Testament, God comes to life and He takes on flesh in Jesus.  He dies on the cross, but He rises again to new and eternal life.  And He blesses all those who have faith in Jesus with new life and eternal life.  The Lord of life conquers death and gives new life to us just like He did for Ruth, Naomi, and Boaz.
As you read the Bible, I hope you will see how God words are alive.  The Bible refers to itself as the “living Word” (1st Peter 1:23).  The Bible is always fresh and never obsolete.  It is indestructible, it gives insight to our lives, and it produces growth.  On top of that, it sustains life.  Praise our extraordinary God for His living Word!
The story of the book of Ruth took place 3,000 years ago.  And yet, the circumstances, the situations, and the characters in the book are alive and well today.  We are the characters in God’s story, and we deal with the same circumstances and situations of the past.  But God is still alive, and His word (the Bible) and His Word-made-flesh (Jesus) gives us new life and eternal life.  Keep reading the living word and remember how God works in the ordinary ways of your life to save you, to bless you, and to give you new and eternal life.  He loves you extraordinarily!  Happy reading.

Faithfully,
Jason +

THE VILLAGE IS COMING!!  November we will focus on IDENTITY.  Who am I? Session 3 looks into this timeless question that everyone faces. Kids want to know where they fit in with their friends and the culture. Parents want to be on the front end of helping shape their kids and guiding them through with a biblical response.
Please join St Paul’s and Light from Light for A Brighter Haiti. This dinner and fellowship is an opportunity to hear about what is going on at Lespwa Timoun and how you can continue to support the ministry.  Click on this link to purchase tickets  lightfromlight.me/abhtickets
