The Missing Piece
So often when therapists email me about issues with clients, where the treatment isn't having the effect it should...
The missing piece is “Specials”
It's easy to get focused on the oedema but if a swollen arm has shoulder restrictions - and you address those shoulder issues, much of the arm oedema my resolve. Or at least your treatment will be much more effective. So whether it is low back pain and hip restriction, knee arthritis or epicondyle pain, these inflammatory conditions all contribute to swelling. Addressing them is also a fundamental principle of all MLD treatments. Treat the proximal system (issues) first. In my opinion, there is little value in spending time doing MLD, taping, bandaging or any other treatment for a swollen hand if you have a frozen shoulder in the way of drainage.
The next response I get when I point this out to the querying therapist is ...
“Oh, I never use specials”
“I don't feel comfortable with them”.
I feel like crying when I hear this!
To me, the Special Techniques are one of the main features that set the Vodder training apart from other Lymphoedema Management systems.
I challenge you to add specials into your Lymphoedema treatments and see what happens!
Not sure how to use them I hear you say? …
