Keeping up to date in the fast moving world of lymphatic research
It's an exciting time to be involved in lymphology but it's also a minefield of new information out there. And what do these new discoveries mean for our practice anyway? In my recent blog I offer 3 tips for assessing the validity of online sources.

Jan Douglass        Announcing the Inaugural
Moving Lymph Therapist Scholarships

My primary goal in teaching, is to enable enough people, in the right places, to deliver effective lymphatic therapies for the millions of people who need them.
It's a big dream, and over the years I have despaired of lymphoedema ever getting the attention that it needs anywhere - other than in a handful of European countries. So I've always admired the therapists that devote their careers to it, certainly our motivations are rarely financial!
But lately I feel the wave, that I always knew was there, beginning to rise. It's like we've been a long way out to sea paddling and paddling along and now the rising sea floor will soon pick us up with increasing pace, and cast us on the shore of comprehensive lymphoedema management for all {insert sunlight and rainbow emoji}. Ok, I know that's a bit fanciful but I've had to do something to keep myself paddling for all these years!
But seriously, the rate of new findings in lymphology, moves towards integration with phlebology, and advances in lymphedema prevention, mean we have developed quite a burgeoning tool-kit that we can use to deal with lymphoedema (see the blog for more on keeping up to date).
And just in time too because the rising tide of baby boomers has only just begun. The first of them, like my darling Mum, are in their 80s now and in need of chronic oedema management. Then there's a big bulge of them, and they have already changed the landscape of healthcare services as they came through their middle years - including advances in breast cancer research. now they will sweep through the way we manage aged care and chronic lifestyle diseases.
I predict a flow on effect in the demand for good lymphoedema services over the next 2 decades.
Baby boomers are educated consumers of health services and we need to be ready.
To add a bit of frenetic paddling to the wave and help it on its way, I want to offer a scholarship for therapists who are working in a community of need, but who might otherwise not be able to access lymphoedema training.
There is one scholarship for one person to complete the full Dr Vodder training, and one for one person to do the MTC Lymph Taping course. Courses must be held and completed in 2020 and the scholarship covers all course fees. You can
find out more about the scholarships here. The demonstrated potential to offer services to an identifiable client group is essential and preference will be given to therapists who live in rural or remote communities.
