As we head full steam into fall, we thought there would be no better time to introduce another member of the Rose Hill Farm team, Tim Boyle, our Farm Manager.  As many of you know, this year has been one of rapid growth at Rose Hill Farm!  Before our picking season commenced in June, a number of exciting projects were already under way.  In January, we began raising Berkshire, Old Spot and Tamworth pigs and now offer pastured raised pork shares.  In March, we began raising our flock of heritage breed chickens that will produce eggs for our farm stand.  In April, with help from Mead Orchard, we planted 1200 new apple trees, increasing the size of our orchard by 40%.  And in early May, we started our Rose Hill Farm apiary from which we harvested our first batch of honey in September.  All of these new additions, on top of the perennial tasks necessary to maintain an orchard, have required an incredible amount of work. Tim, our Farm Manager, has worked tirelessly to make many of these exciting additions possible and is an integral member of the Rose Hill Farm family.

Name: Tim Boyle
Hometown: Clinton Corners
How long have you worked at RHF? Almost 1 year
Role: Farm Manager
Favorite RHF fruit: Blueberries

What's your background? I grew up not far from Rose Hill Farm in the town of Rhinebeck, New York.  I studied wildlife biology at Cobleskill College in upstate New York before joining my father in running his construction and electric business here in the Hudson Valley. My son was born in 2002 and I’ve enjoyed watching him grow up in my hometown, coaching his little league games, and cheering him on as he competes in local Top Chef competitions.
How did you get into farming? I first started farming 4 years ago at Hearty Roots in Clermont, New York. Hearty Roots is an organic CSA and during my three seasons at the farm, I drove down to New York City to drop-off CSA neighborhood shares, harvested vegetables, managed irrigation, and worked on the construction and electric around the farm which included building the new 40’x50’ wash barn with three coolers. Starting in my last year at the farm, I switched from irrigation lead to overseeing livestock operations which includes managing the flock of more than 700 free-range chickens and pasture raising 14 pigs a year.
Tell us about your new role as Farm Manager at Rose Hill Farm.  Transitioning from an organic vegetable farm to an orchard has been an challenging and exciting endeavor. Learning about stone fruit, pome fruit and berry phenology, harvesting times and methods; tree pruning; integrated pest management; soil management; new tractors and implements and the overall management of the farm. While learning all of the components that go along with running an orchard, we are also using my prior experience and knowledge to add pigs and chickens at Rose Hill.
What do you do in your (very little) spare time? When I’m not at the farm, I’m home with my wife, son, and two dogs managing our own chicken flock and putting up local produce for the winter.

While picking apples, you'll enjoy the above view of the Catskills from the top of the orchard.

Please reach out with any questions, comments or suggestions - we would love to hear from you and look forward to meeting you at the farm soon!

Warm Regards,
