eManagement Tips - September 2018

A free monthly update for Associates and Members of RiverRhee's Managers' Community

Welcome to RiverRhee's managers' version of the September 2018 issue of eManagement Tips, our monthly resource for new and experienced managers who have attended or are considering one of our management courses.

Our series of blogs about the various modules of our management courses continues with this illustration for motivation.  The "What's motivating you this morning?" blog on LinkedIn attracted a fair bit of interest!

This month's issue of eManagement tips also includes some coaching insights from Liz Mercer, RiverRhee Associate and lead trainer for Coaching Skills for Managers - which is next scheduled for the 14th October.

We also have a summary of another of Daniel Goleman et al's Emotional Intelligence booklets - this one is on Organisational Awareness.

September has started off with quite a flourish, with the first of our new One-day Supervisors' courses, and some new ideas for 2019.  We also have most of our other one-day courses running during October and November, as well as our last Introduction to Management for 2018 in December.  You can read more about all of this in the Update on our Courses at the foot of this newsletter.

Coaching: mindset, skills and emotional intelligence

The GROW coaching model is one of the tools that managers from our Introduction to Management course get particularly enthusiastic about.

It's a powerful example of the different mindset that we can have towards managing people: one that invites direct reports to take ownership for generating ideas, solving problems and for their personal and professional development.

This change of mindset however is not always easy.  Coaching also requires a good set of skills, and of course emotional intelligence has a big role to play here too.

Liz Mercer runs RiverRhee's Coaching Skills for Managers course, which takes managers to the next level from the Introduction to Management.  The course is next scheduled for the 14th October.

Liz has dug out some very relevant insights on coaching (which echo the key messages in the RiverRhee course) from a recent Harvard Business Review article which she shares in this RiverRhee blog on Coaching: a mindset, skills and emotional intelligence.

Organisational awareness

Booklet number 7 in Daniel Goleman et al’s “Building Blocks of Emotional Intelligence” is entitled ‘Organizational Awareness”.

It's a topic that requires both intellectual and emotional intelligence and, if done well, will benefit individuals, leaders, teams and entire organisations!

Many of us will already know about the power of SWOT (Strength, Weakness, Opportunity, Threat) and PESTLE (Political, Economical, Social, Technical, Legal, Economic) as strategic analysis tools.

What is interesting about Daniel Goleman et al's concept of organisational awareness is their "system" approach to it.  Yes the strategic analysis tools are important, but so also are an understanding of the informal or social networks at play in an organisation; the degree of engagement of every employee with the organisation's vision, mission and values; and our ability to extend our personal emotional intelligence to the organisation as a whole.

You can read more about how organisational awareness combines  both intellectual and emotional intelligence in this latest blog.

Update on our courses

Our new One-day Supervisor’s course on 6th September was very well received.  Delegates included both very experienced line managers, and those who were new to it. The feedback was neatly summarised in this comment from one delegate: ".. an enjoyable and engaging course. .. a good refresher. ... made me think carefully about how I approach becoming a new line manager."

We have a few people already interested in a second version of the course so are currently exploring dates for this in December or in January.

Feedback from the course suggested that there might be interest in two new half-day courses: Managing Performance and Developing People; and Building a High Performance Team.  We are collecting more views on these and may start scheduling them in 2019.

We had an excellent in-house Introduction to Lean and Six Sigma course with 14 delegates (!) - "Really informative, applicable, interactive course" "I had fun and learnt a lot". The next open course is scheduled for 6th November.

Our next open course on Effective Influencing and Communication on the 20th September is full, as is Transition to Leadership on the 18th October.

We have had to cancel the September Introduction to Management course due to insufficient numbers, but already have enough people to run it in December, with space for up to 4 more.
Do get in touch to enquire about or book a place on one of our upcoming courses:
  • Coaching Skills for Managers - 16th October
  • Transition to Leadership - 18th October (FULL)
  • Introduction to Lean and Six Sigma - 6th November
  • The First Steps in Selling - 7th November
  • Introduction to Project Management - 8th November
  • Presentation Skills - 13th November
  • Managing Change - 14th November
  • Introduction to Management - 11th-13th December
