The J Connection

Waivers of the J-1 212(e) 2-year home residence requirement

J-1 exchange visitors should consult with their department and IPSO advisors before beginning any waiver request process. IPSO cannot offer guidance on securing the waiver itself but will advise on the impact a waiver will have on your future U.S. immigration status.

We will not transfer your J-1 program to another university or make substantive changes to your J-1 record after you have received a Department of State (DOS) No Objection Letter.

If you are subject to 212(e) and your department has agreed to sponsor you for H-1B status, you must have the I-612 approval in hand before a change of status can be filed with USCIS. A Department of State (DOS) No Objection Letter is not sufficient to change status.
How do I know if I need a waiver?

Check your J-1 visa. If you need a waiver, it will say "Subject to Section 212(E) Two Year Rule."

TAXES
Deadline for filing taxes approaching

Tuesday, April 17 is the last day to file your taxes! As a J-1, you are required to complete a tax form — even if you don't earn income in the U.S. Each of your J-2 dependents also needs to complete this form.

For details, email Rebecca Wagner, Augusta University Tax Specialist.

AROUND AUGUSTA
Augusta welcomes Masters Golf Tournament

The Masters, a golf tournament famous all over the world, lures thousands of tourists from across the globe to Augusta each year. Restaurants and hotels in the area will be busy, and you will see an increase in traffic, especially on Washington Road. Take extra caution and be patient during Masters Week.

Here’s a little trivia: The land that is now Augusta National Golf Club and home of the Masters Tournament used to be Fruitland Nurseries — a farm for peaches, apples, grapes and strawberries.
