In this issue:

Dear <<First Name>>

As the academic year comes to a close there is much for the alliance to celebrate. Through the active contribution of member schools, we have been able to expand the range of courses and events we provide, work with more schools and build our capacity to deliver support where it is needed. Here are some key metrics for 2017-2018:
  • 14 new networks created with 360 teacher bookings across the year
  • Our CPD offer has more than doubled
  • SLE numbers have increased from 20 to 30, DLE from 5 to 15 and TSLE/NLE from 2 to 5, giving us a total of 50 system leaders
  • We have recruited 28 trainee teachers, up from 10 this time last year
  • Membership up from 63 to 82 schools
Dartmoor TSA is also actively contributing to the development of the wider self-improving, school-led system. We were one of 9 TSAs nationally to secure an Aspiring Teaching School Grant to support Great Torrington School to meet Teaching School designation. Additionally, in September we begin a formal partnership with two other TSAs - Exeter Consortium and TSA and South West TSA - to increase further the quality and capacity of the teaching school programme. In future we hope that other TSAs will join to strengthen the programme.

Thank you to our member schools, system and network leaders, programme leads and staff that take part in the courses and events we run. I cannot emphasise the following point enough: our strength as an alliance is in the wealth of expertise that exists in member schools and the collective desire to support one another.

Have a super summer holiday.

Best wishes
Martin Smith | Director of Dartmoor TSA

Some of the feedback from Headteachers:
  • 'The preciseness of the review report enabled all school stakeholders to celebrate in our achievement.’
  • ‘For me the team enabled the visit to be successful. Their approach was challenging but supportive and much was learnt by everyone during the visit.’
  • ‘A very positive experience which I would recommend. Very good professional development and a great opportunity to talk through your SEF.’

Developing Leaders of Pupil Premium

The importance of closing the gap / diminishing the difference for disadvantaged pupils has been a consistent feature of the education landscape since 2010. There is a growing body of research available to schools about how best to improve outcomes for disadvantaged pupils and a wide range of CPD. One 'cold spot' in the provision is training for the specific role of Pupil Premium Leaders.

We are delighted that Aaron Meredith (Head of Ernesettle Primary School, Plymouth) and Stephen Farmer (Head of Cranbrook Education Campus, Exeter) are going to design and deliver a year-long CPD programme for Pupil Premium Leaders. Both heads have a strong track record in successfully improving outcomes for PP pupils, which is evidenced through their recent Ofsted inspections.

Details of the Programme can be accessed HERE and bookings can be made HERE. We have 15 signed up so far which is excellent.

Podcast of the month

Podcasts are excellent ways of accessing interviews and presentations. Each month we will recommend a podcast on an educational theme that we think will be of interest to our newsletter readers.

This month's recommended podcast is an interview with Professor Paul Kirschner.
Kirchner is one of the world’s leading researchers into instructional design and on this podcast from Tes Podagogy, he explains that direct instruction is widely misinterpreted in schools. He believes most teachers see it as “drill and skill, authoritarian, isolated fact accumulation, one size fits all” when it is nothing of the sort. Click HERE to listen.
