Monday 11th Feb 2019 | Dartmoor TSA Newsletter
In this issue:

Dear <<First Name>>

Thank you for opening this week's Dartmoor TSA newsletter.

We are approaching our membership renewal period. In early March we will send all member schools a summary of their activity with Dartmoor TSA covering the period April 2018-March 2019. This 'Membership Account Statement' is designed to enable schools to reflect on the benefits of Dartmoor TSA membership. We will also send schools an invitation to renew membership for the year ahead and to provide feedback on the services we provide through our Members' Evaluation.

I hope you have a restful half term next week.

Best wishes
Martin Smith | Director of Dartmoor TSA

Introducing the new Early Career Framework

Launched 28th January, the Early Career Framework represents a significant reform of the NQT and NQT+1 phase.  It has been designed to support early career teacher development in 5 core areas: behaviour management, pedagogy, curriculum, assessment and professional behaviours.

For national roll-out in September 2021, the DfE have committed to:

  • funding and guaranteeing 5% off-timetable in the second year of teaching for all early career teachers - early career teachers will continue to have a 10% timetable reduction in their first year of induction
  • creating high quality, freely available ECF curricula and training materials
  • establishing full ECF training programmes
  • funding time for mentors to support early career teachers
  • fully funding mentor training

New teachers will receive what other professions have enjoyed for a long time: a structured, consistent and coherent induction period, in which they are taught the accumulated knowledge and skills necessary to not only survive but thrive in their chosen profession.

Accelerate Programme | Supporting Early Career Teachers

Accelerate is an innovative free-of-charge programme specially designed for teachers in the first five years of their career. It is aimed principally at schools identified by the Department for Education as opportunity and priority areas (Torridge District is the only local such area). Schools that are Ofsted graded 3 and 4 are being particularly targeted.

The programme is fully funded by the Department for Education’s Teaching and Leadership Innovation Fund and will be run by Education Development Trust in collaboration with the Chartered College of Teaching. It has been specifically designed to help improve pupil attainment and keep talented teachers within the profession and is aligned with the new Gov’t Recruitment and Retention Strategy, and particularly The Early Career Framework.

Great Feedback on our Leading PP Programme

We are at the mid-point in our Leading Pupil Premium Programme and have conducted a detailed survey to capture early impacts. The results (from 19 surveyed) are very encouraging:

  • 95% Strongly Agree 'I am developing a fuller understanding of the expectations, responsibilities and accountabilities that come with PP funding'
  • 85% Strongly Agree / Agree 'I am developing a fuller understanding of the expectations, responsibilities and accountabilities that come with PP funding'
  • 95% Strongly Agree / Agree 'I am increasingly confident in my ability to conduct a rigorous PP school review'

We will report on the full impact at the end of the programme. Thank you to Aaron Meredith (Head of Ernesettle Community School) and Stephen Farmer (Head Cranbrook Education Campus) for their inspirational training and leadership of the programme. Also thank you to the delegates who have been superb.
