Dear <<First Name>>

The school improvement landscape is changing. Babcock LDP is looking to develop a new approach to delivering school improvement services in Devon with Teaching Schools very much at the heart of the design and delivery of what will be a new Excellence for All programme. Paul Delbridge-Smith, the new head of Quality and Standards, has signalled a strong desire to work in close partnership with Teaching Schools so that we move towards a more joined up system. We welcome this new approach. Dartmoor TSA has worked hard to build up a team of excellent SLEs and TSLEs / NLEs who are able to make a significant contribution to Devon-wide approach to school improvement.

Thank you to colleagues who have recently taken part in one of our new leadership programmes. The Early Headship Programme started last week with 13 delegates from Exeter TSA and Dartmoor TSA and the Aspiring Leader Programmes for middle and senior leaders are at mid-way points. These courses are designed and delivered by serving leaders, which is the real strength of the teaching school approach.

Look out for the many superb events coming up this half.

Best wishes
Martin Smith | Director of Dartmoor TSA

NEW | Working Memory Workshops (Secondary) | 23rd Apr + 2nd May

Great opportunity to explore the importance of working memory in students’ learning and long term memory. These two workshops - designed and delivered by Mel Bourne from The King's School - provide both theory and practice to enable teachers and support staff to develop students’ working memory in lessons and other learning occasions. Aspiring Senior Leader Programme Update

On Thursday 22nd February, Isca Academy hosted thirteen sparkling leaders of the future as part of the Aspiring Senior Leader Programme (ASLP). The session was led by Siobhan Meredith, Headteacher (Marine Academy Primary) and Gary King, Deputy Headteacher (Isca Academy and included an excellent presentation from Isca’s Headteacher, Aimee Mitchell, on ‘The Not to do List’ when applying for Leadership positions. So far on the ASLP, delegates have reflected on research from Daniel Goleman, discussed what it means to be operational and strategic and taken a DOPE Bird Personality Test to see explore their leadership style. For the final day, the Leaders will present about their journeys. Finally, thank you to all the schools who have kindly hosted work shadowing visits from delegates in recent months. Share your teaching ideas in the Dartmoor Dispatch

As I am sure you are aware, DTSA has already sent out to schools two very popular editions of the new teaching and learning publication 'The Dartmoor Dispatch' (Click HERE to view). We hope it will be a platform for sharing amazing primary and secondary practice across Devon. Are you doing something in your classroom that might be worth sharing? This could range from introducing a new type of starter activity in your classroom to redesigning the entire curriculum. Every great idea – big or small could help inspire another teacher in the area. We would welcome articles between 500 and 1500 words from anyone working in primary and secondary schools in North Devon. Alternatively, if you have an idea for a story that will interest teachers in the area then please get in touch. Any contributors can earn £100 credit voucher against any of Dartmoor TSA’s services. I look forward to hearing your amazing ideas.

North Devon | NQT and RQT Workshop

On Wednesday 21st February, some of North Devon’s newer teachers had an intensive day-long workshop at Beaford Primary School, led by Headteacher Annette Yates and Dartmoor TSA’s John Stanier. The issues of happiness, workload and well-being were explored deeply and delegates used evidence based research to reflect on where their attentions would have the biggest impact on pupil learning. One delegate commented that the training had been “sooooo useful” As we know, helping new teachers cope with the demands of the unique job of teaching is so important so that we can keep more talented practitioners in our profession. Please let us know if Dartmoor TSA can help to support the new teachers in your school.

18 now recruited to DTSA School Direct

Our campaign to get more people into teaching is going strongly. As of today we have received 52 applications and of these 18 have gone on to accept offers from us to take up school direct places in 10 of our member schools. We are currently interviewing on a weekly basis and have been delighted with the calibre of the new recruits.

What's the opportunity? We can recruit trainee teachers with you / for you and enable you to host their main placement. This can be a valuable way of managing teacher recruitment in an increasingly competitive climate. You may have a member of non-teaching staff or a parent looking to train.
