The first quarter of 2017 has seen a busy period for the Unique Design team. We'd like to thank all of our customers for their continued support.
In this newsletter we'll look at different options for benchtops. With so many quality choices available nowdays, we thought we'd take this opportunity to run through a few of the more popular options as this seems to be an area where our customers are often undecided.

Benchtops. So many choices!

The benchtop selection for a kitchen or bathroom will have a major impact on your project. It will affect appearance, durability, cost and functionality. Let's look at some of the options:

Manufactured Stone

Manufactured stones are available in a large range of colors and styles. We sell Caesarstone® / Essastone® / SileStone® / SmartStone® and Quantum Quartz®. The main advantage of a manufactured stone is that it looks uniform and has a consistent pattern. The bonding material makes it more shock resistant compared to the natural stones.

The quality of these manufactured stones is improving constantly. Moreover, the manufactured stone does not require regular sealing.

Granite

Granite benchtops require the customised matching of the natural stone with the benchtop size. While granite is approximately the same cost as manufactured stone, customers need to be aware of the need to seal natural stone on a regular basis (especially the lighter colours). Natural stone is porous and if not sealed on a regular basis the benchtop can be susceptible to stains. Natural stone is a much harder surface than manufactured stone or laminate and less likely to chip, crack or scratch.

Granite is ideal for use in outdoor situations as exposure to sun will not fade or damage a granite benchtop. However, the toughness of stone makes it less forgiving with glass and china ware. Granite benchtops have a spectacular appearance. The colour of granites can vary from pink to gray to black depending on the composition of the stone. The darker the colour of the stone the denser it is.

Marble
Like granite, marble benchtops require the customised matching of the natural stone with the benchtop size. Marble looks beautiful but is generally porous and more susceptible to stains. Marble requires regular sealing for protection and to maintain its colour.

Due to the recent technology advances made with the production of manufactured stone, the popularity of marble is diminishing. That said, many of our customers choose marble benchtops and we do sell and make marble benchtops.
Laminate
Many people associate laminate benchtops with the Laminex brand and immediately think of the 1970's kitchen they grew up with. However, laminate manufacturers like Laminex, Polytec and Formica are now producing a wide range of laminate benchtops with a range of colours and textures. Laminate manufacturers can provide benchtops that are hard wearing, professional looking and lower cost to comparable manufactured stone benchtops.
Laminated benchtops can usually be installed at the time of kitchen installation where as granite, marble (natural stone) and manafactured stone needs to be templated post kitchen install. This results in a shorter installation time for kitchens with laminated benchtops by up to 10 working days. The laminate option is very popular for rental properties or for preparing properties to sell.
Other Options
We have so far touched on a few of the more popular benchtop options but there are a range of other options that look great and are effective in the right environment. These include DuPont®  Corian® , Timber and Stainless Steel. Corian® is a hard wearing surface that can be sculptured into any shape you can imagine. In the photo opposite, the Corian® benchtop has been designed with a fully integrated and seamless sink.
Stainless steel benchtops are often used in outdoor (BBQ) environments as stainless steel is weatherproof, easy to maintain and looks great around the BBQ area.

Timber benchtops require more maintenance to protect the surface but can add a more classical style to your kitchen design.
