SUDAN - TORTURE, ARBITRARY DETENTIONS AND INTIMIDATION

ProtectDefenders.eu's partners report on cases of torture, arbitrary detention, intimidation and threats against human rights defenders:

  • Dr. Mudawi Ibrahim Adam, an internationally recognised human rights defender and the founder of the Sudan Social Development Organization (SUDO), has been arbitrarily detained since 7 December 2016. Dr. Mudawi is known for his role in exposing human rights violations in Darfur. He has repeatedly been jailed for charges related to his human rights work.

  • Recent information in the case of Dr. Mudawi reveals that Sudanese authorities tortured fellow human rights defender Hafiz Idris in detention and obtained a forced confession that might be used to charge both human rights defenders inter alia with espionage and undermining constitutional order. Hafiz Idris is a human rights defender who focuses on the rights and well-being of internally displaced persons in Sudan..

  • Shamael Al-Noor,a journalist working with Al-Tayyar newspaper, and criticising extremism, has been publicly accused of heresy and blasphemy -a crime punishable by death in the country- by a Sudanese Imam, known to be a supporter of the Islamic State.

Sudan is ranked 174th out of 180 countries in the RSF’s World Press Freedom Index.

ProtectDefenders.eu has provided support to Sudanese defenders through two emergency grants, one temporary relocation initiative and training programmes benefiting defenders from the country.

DRC - REPRESSION AGAINST PRO-DEMOCRACY ACTIVISTS

Last month, ProtectDefenders.eu partners have issued several alerts warning about the wave of arrests against members of Compte à Rebours and Lucha movements in the Democratic Republic of Congo:

  • Between 24 October and 21 December 2016, 37 human rights defenders, members of these two pro-democracy organisations have been arbitrarily arrested, attacked and harassed.

  • To the present day, at least 8 human rights defenders are still under detention: Chris Shematsi, John Ngandu and Samuel Bosasele, members of Compte à Rebours, and Patrick Musasa Tshibanda, Faustin Dunia, Glody Ntambwe, Jacques Muhindo and Fabrice Kubuya, members of Lutte pour le changement (Lucha).

DRC is ranked 152nd out of 180 countries in the RSF’s World Press Freedom Index.

MACEDONIA - SMEAR CAMPAIGN AND ADMINISTRATIVE HARASSMENT

Partners condemn the ongoing smear campaign targeting civil society organisations, including human rights organisations, in Macedonia. Last month:

  • The Macedonian Helsinki Committee, together with 20 other civil society organisations, was subjected to a financial inspection of its activities. Moreover, the Public Revenue Office would have illegally leaked private financial information to pro-governmental movements and some state media officers, who used the information to substantiate smear campaigns against the MHC and other human rights organisations and defenders.

  • Pro-government organisations circulated leaflets in Skopje listing more than 40 civil society leaders including journalists, professors, opposition party members, as well as MHC leaders Mr. Gordan Kalajdziev, Ms. Uranija Pirovska, and Mr. Kocho Andonovski with mentions of their respective salaries and accusing them of creating an army to “terrorise the state”.

Macedonia is ranked 118th out of 180 countries in the RSF’s World Press Freedom Index.
