As we observe Memorial Day this weekend and pay tribute to those who have served in the Armed Forces we are thankful for our freedom as we look ahead to upcoming club events.
Knox Farm Learn and Practice
This event is a great opportunity to learn how to do orienteering. You will work with an instructor to learn how to read the map and navigate and then complete a training course with the instructor. Register near the Milk House at 10:00 am. This is a 60 minute training event costing $10. The fee also allows you to participate in the meet that follows. Email the Meet Director Linc Blaisdell, or call him at (716) 479-9431 with questions.
Additional Instructors needed for Knox Farm
You do not have to be an expert orienteer to be an instructor—anyone who has participated for a couple of years or anyone who has completed an orange level course has enough knowledge to be an instructor.
The instructors will spend up to a half an hour showing the beginners what our maps look like and showing them how to navigate from point to point. There is NOT much emphasis on using a compass other than getting the map oriented to North before proceeding to a location. After the half hour of instruction, the leader will walk his or her group through a little course of three controls set up by Jackie and Linc.
Those who teach will also be able to participate in the meet themselves.
Please let Linc know if you can help out at this meet either through e-mail to email@example.com or by phone at 716-479-9431.

Club Facebook Page and Group
The club now has an open Facebook page for events and other news. Like the page to get Facebook updates about club, orienteering and outdoor happenings. The previous club Facebook group has been converted to a group that will focus on discussions of the map hikes. As Rob says on a post in the group, " This group can be used to report missing controls, hazards, and other information by anyone participating in a Map Hike. Club volunteers monitor posts and answer questions about the courses. " Map hike participants can check out that group for the latest map hike news.
