Annual Meeting Recap

The annual meeting was a success.  People gathered at Storher Lodge and enjoyed camaraderie and an array of food.  Map hike maps are now available and many enjoyed being able to purchase their maps at the meeting.

Review of 2016

Accomplishments of 2016 were shared such as the completion of a new map of Knox Farm where there will be a meet this year and a map hike.  Some maps have also been updated including the Ellicottville map that now includes little rock city and the Schoellkopf map.

The club website has also been redesigned to give it a more modern look and feel.  Take a look here.  The web address is the same so no need to update any favorites or bookmarks. Although the website is not completely finished and still needs some tweaking the schedule of events is all on the new website and it includes the ability to send events to a Google calendar or iCal.  Check it out!

2017 Goals

Club goals for 2017 include increasing membership.  Membership dues entitle you to discounts at meets.  Additionally, membership dues support the club's efforts which include costs such as mapping and equipment. Another goal includes filling some volunteer positions which are described below.

Recognition of Map Hike Completions and Volunteers

Attendees who completed map hikes in 2016 were recognized with a certificate and volunteers were thanked for their efforts in the past year.

Orienteering Activity

The weather perked up throughout the afternoon making the orienteering activity all the more enjoyable.  Jackie designed an activity where participants had to follow the purple line on the map finding controls along the way.  As the controls were found some had letters that could be used to form words associated with orienteering.  But, you had to be careful, veer from the purple line and you might miss some controls.  Those that participated enjoyed the activity and commented on the creativity involved in creating it.

Help out the club

The club runs on the efforts of volunteers and there are multiple ways that the club could use some help.  If you are interested in assisting in any of the ways listed below simply reply to this email and let us know.  We'd be happy to have you help.

Newsletter editor

The newsletter is put out a couple times a year and provides articles on club activities and meet results.  If you are willing to take over the job of newsletter editor or would like more information on what it involves let us know by replying to this email or email Rob Reeves.

Emery Park Meet Director

The Emery Park Meet that is scheduled for September needs a meet director.  The meet director works with the board to organize all the positions necessary to run the meet including the course designer, registrars and electronics crew.  The meet director often puts out the controls before the meet and may be part of a team taking down controls after the meet.  Let us know if you may be interested.

Photography help

With the website redesign it would be helpful to have more photos to display.  If you would like to contribute any photos especially moving forward into this season we'd be happy to share them.

Marketing help

Although we have a few people who work on marketing efforts for the club it would be extremely helpful to have more people involved.  The more we can get the word out about the club and club events the more successful the club can be. Let us know if you want to join the marketing team.

Meet volunteers

Meets are run by volunteers who design the courses, instruct beginners, work the registration table, work the map hike table, put out controls, work the computer punch system and take down controls.  Volunteering to help at a meet still allows you to participate in the meet.  If you would like to help in any way at a meet send us a reply or contact a specific meet director.  Help at meets is always appreciated.

Erie County Parks Needs Survey

As orienteers who use area parks you may be interested in completing the Erie County Parks, Recreation and Forestry Needs Assessment survey. Click the link if you'd like to participate.
