AMSA Global Health Bulletin
Connecting Our Community

May 2019

Dear global health enthusiasts,

The Federal Election is just around the corner, which means we have an exciting opportunity to advocate for global health to the next Australian government.

AMSA Global Health will be campaigning for global health action in the upcoming election, and we want you to get involved.

By getting involved, Australian medical students can help achieve sustainable, universal and equitable health for all.

I hope you will join us in raising awareness amongst our politicians, peers and local communities about the importance of global health issues in the upcoming election.

Georgia Behrens
Vice-Chair (External), AMSA Global Health

⏰ DEADLINE: Friday 17th May
Applications to join the AMSA delegation to IFMSA August General Assembly in Taiwan are now open!

The experience of attending a General Assembly of the International Federation of Medical Students' Associations is unique. Over a thousand medical students representing over a hundred countries descend on one unsuspecting town for a week of lively discussions, exchanging of ideas and forming new friendships.

The General Assembly allows IFMSA members to debate and vote on new policies for the organisation, and to encourage international relations between medical students from all over the world.

As a representative of AMSA, you will have the chance to represent Australia, to contribute to discussions on specific topics (such as public health or human rights), to put forward ideas on new goals for the IFMSA and to learn skills from and hear about initiatives run by other medical students. If you're lucky, you might even get to try some Canadian maple-whisky or Icelandic fermented shark at the National Food and Drink Party!

We encourage all applicants, be you first or final year, AMSA naive or veteran, experienced or just enthusiastic! Don't be shy, just apply!

⏰ Webinar next Tuesday 8:30pm - 9:30pm AEDT

Q1: What's your role in AMSA Global Health?
I'm the Vice-Chair External, which means I oversee AMSA Global Health's advocacy work. I work with our wonderful projects teams (Code Green, Crossing Borders, Healthy Communities and Reproductive Rights) plus our Global Health Policy officer to get our voices out into the world and try to make change happen.

Q2: What does 'Global Health' mean to you?
To me, global health is all about optimising our social, political and economic systems so they support human and planetary health. You shouldn't have to be wealthy to be healthy, and human prosperity shouldn't come at the cost of the planet. Equity and sustainability  are the key principles that drive all my work in global health.

Q3: What is the question you'd most like to ask others?

What are you most grateful for?
