HealthTech News

European health records
The European Commission is recommending extensions to the electronic health record, enabling access to complete records across borders within the EU. The benefits for European citizens will include:
  • In case of an accident while travelling, doctors' access to the patient's information will enable more effective treatment.
  • Increasing the quality and ensure continuity of care for citizens as they move around the EU.
  • Boosting medical research by easing the sharing of data.

Thai Robotics
In 2017, Ramathibodi Hospital, a leading government hospital in Bangkok, successfully performed the first robot-assisted brain surgery in Asia. Today, robot-assisted surgery has been adopted in many hospitals for different operations like spine, heart, eyes, intestine, and gynaecologic surgery.

The Thailand Board of Investment is now offering incentives for the medical robotics industry, as it looks to build its reputation in medical services and devices.

Opportunities for innovation

Innovate UK - Biomedical Catalyst

UK businesses can apply for funding in two competitions to explore and evaluate the commercial potential of a scientific idea to solve a healthcare challenge.

The 'Feasibility and Primer' competition is for a share of up to £3 million to explore and evaluate the commercial potential of an innovative scientific idea or to carry out a technical evaluation through to proof of concept

The 'Early and Late Stage' competition grants a share of up to £7 million to enable companies to create a data package that can support the subsequent testing of products or to carry out evaluations in a clinical setting or other relevant environment.

Spotlight on innovators

DemDx is used by leading teaching hospitals such as Guy's and St Thomas'

The accurate diagnosis of a condition, going through the clinical reasoning process, is a difficult skill to learn. Medical students and young doctors hone their abilities over time, through training and on the job experience.

DemDx is a clinical training tool available for healthcare professionals and students, both doctors and nurses. It promises to improve and accelerate the learning process. Including the knowledge of over 200 specialists, the tool is being used to train student doctors in leading teaching hospitals, such as Guy's and St Thomas' in England.
