Ada Calhoun is author of the engrossing, funny, un-sugar-coated new marriage memoir Wedding Toasts I’ll Never Give (based on one of the most popular Modern Love columns of recent years, it's part memoir, part smart self-help.) She's also the author of the acclaimed (and impressively researched!) 2015 New York City history St. Marks Is Dead. Ada has also ghostwritten a dozen books for major publishers, though if she tells you which ones she’ll have to kill you. In college, she majored in Sanskrit.
Some things Ada loves:
"Josie Maran Coconut Watercolor Eyeshadow. A makeup-artist friend of mine who used to work at Sephora clued me into this magical elixir. It’s only about $10, the colors are flattering on just about anyone, and it stays on forever. I like the Rose Gold best. They don’t have it at Sephora anymore but you can still get it online."
"Brooklyn Fox Lingerie. This little Williamsburg, Brooklyn, shop has the prettiest underwear on earth and the people who work there are eerily good at their job. A shop girl once asked if she could help me and when I said my size she looked me up and down and said, “Thirty-four? No, I think you’re a 32.” I was wearing three layers at the time so I was dubious. But she was right."
"Red Cross Certification Classes. I got re-certified in AED/CPR and First Aid last year for the first time in probably twenty years, and I couldn’t believe how much the classes have improved. The Red Cross now has this almost fun new training plan that’s part classroom and part simulation online, like a video game in which you go from horrible scenario to horrible scenario. Having that card in my wallet and knowing I could wield a defibrillator if it came to that makes me feel like an ever so slightly better citizen."
"The Egg Cuber. What do you give to the person who has everything? Square eggs. I don’t know why. But it’s the perfect present for children or adults."

My friend Jen Ator, the fitness director at Women's Health, was raving about these sunglasses the other day, so of course I made her share her obsession here:
"Aviators are my sunglasses of choice while running, but few pairs actually perform as well as I'd like them to. Most bobble around, or slip or fog as I get sweaty. The first time I ran in these Roka ones, I had moments where I seriously almost forgot I was wearing them. I'm not kidding. Featherlight, super sharp, and they stay put. Worth every penny."
