Ellen Bennett is the founder of cute apron company Hedley & Bennett. While working as a line cook at two LA restaurants (Baco Mercat and Providence), she got annoyed by the stale look and poor quality of the aprons and helped design new ones for the Baco Mercat staff. Since then, her company has made aprons for some of the top restaurants in the country, earned celebrity chef fans (oh hey, Martha Stewart and Mario Batali) and collaborated with the likes of SpaceX and Google. Ellen has a pet pig named Oliver, and announced the lottery on national TV in Mexico every night while working through culinary school in Mexico City.
Some things Ellen loves:
"A Color Story. If VSCOcam and SnapSeed had a baby, it would be this app! I use it to edit all of my photos—It makes them look crisp, bright, beautiful and consistent, it's easy to use, and it was developed by a brilliant blogger who knew exactly what was missing. And Boomerang for Gmail, a plug-in for Gmail (not the app that creates videos on loop, though I also love that), has saved me so many times. If you live/work in email land (which, let’s be honest, we all do) I highly recommend you start using it. Right before you hit “send” on an email, you "add a Boomerang" and select the time frame—2 days, 10 days, a month—and on that day you'll get a reminder. I'm always on the run and on the road, and this seriously helps keep projects moving!"
"The Animal Print Shop. A husband and wife team is behind this fine-art-meets-animals print shop and online gallery. They photograph animals in such an elegant way and the prints are striking. Their photos of baby animals are perfect for nurseries (and awesome baby gifts), but we have a beautiful giraffe in our living room. I also love Robert Siegel Studio Pottery. Robert Siegel is a local LA potter who makes handmade and one-of-a-kind pieces that are thick, durable and beautiful. I have a 12-piece set of his mugs, plates, a few vases that I use for every damn brunch and lunch that I throw. They make the table feel so much more special yet they're clean enough to fit with so many different colors and styles."
"I found the Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler when I was in Japan, and now whenever I have my makeup professionally done I spot it in the makeup gals' kits. It has a cult following because it gives eyelashes the perfect curl (rather than make your eyelashes look like an awning, which most curlers do.)"
"OK is an amazing jewel box of a store, with its original location in west LA and a second in Silver Lake. It has the best curated books, from cookbooks to design, an entire wall of taxidermy butterflies beautifully framed, pens from all over the world (Sweden, Japan), epic papers and notepads. OK is OG LA cool. I love good hats, so when I stumbled into Kemo Sabe in Aspen I was literally in heaven. It's one of those classic Western hat shops that is so old school it's now trendy, but it was never trying to be trendy in the first place. There are hats everywhere—on the ceiling, on the floor—beautiful classic Stetson hats. If you're in Aspen you need to visit and treat yourself to one."

When we hung out recently, my friend Jenn (of Fat Mascara podcast fame) was raving about her new mattress, so of course I made her share the goods here:
“I was able to get a full-sized Tuft & Needle mattress from my office to my apartment, up a three-floor walk-up, into a tiny alcove, and unfurled onto a bed frame...all by myself. That feat was insanely gratifying and made me feel like an independent-ass woman, which is reason enough to recommend the mattress. But it also happens to be amazing—cool and firm with a nice bounce and none of the tofu-like sink and swampy warmth of my last mail-order mattress.”
