From the Head of College
A recent tribute to our former Master, Robin Ashwin, who sadly passed away in September, said that as Master “he helped students make the most of their university years during the 1990s”.

This beautiful encapsulation of what the College can do for students brought to mind that Rachel Buxton, Hawker and Rhodes Scholar and our in-coming Director of Learning, has said that her Oxford doctoral thesis arose from a book review passed on to her by Robin Ashwin. A simple act – sharing a book review – can help to shape a life or a career.

Students of recent years have told me how much they have owed to the encouragement they received from Rose Alwyn as Master. She too helped them to “make the most of their university years”, and they are very grateful.

Ian and Pamela Wall's remarkable generosity to the College, shown yet again in their enabling our carpark extension, reflects Ian's deep gratitude to the College for the profound and positive difference it made in his life.

It is my goal to do all I can to help our students gain the greatest benefits they can – in their academic development and personal growth – from their years at St Mark’s.

I am very grateful to all members of the St Mark’s community who have made me so welcome, and whose deep affection for the College I have come very quickly to share.

Warmest good wishes to you and your family for a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Professor Don Markwell
Head of College
