e-News May 2020

From the Head of College

When you read the lead story in this e-news about the creative ways in which so many of our students and staff have promoted community and have supported each other – and members of the wider community – during the pandemic, I think you will see why I am so proud of our College community at this time.

It was particularly gratifying to see how our students observed Anzac Day, remembering the fallen with gratitude for the sacrifices they made for those who would come after them, and how students offered to help at-risk members of our local and Old Collegian communities.

Like our many students confronted with acute financial hardship because of the pandemic and who are being helped by our emergency Student Support Fund, I am especially grateful to all members of our wider St Mark’s community who have already stepped forward to help with generous donations. The need remains substantial and real, and any support you can give our students through the Student Support Fund will be deeply appreciated.

Gratitude for life-changing support for students is also reflected in over 80 of our students writing to express their thanks for scholarships which they received this year. I think you will find their expressions of thanks deeply moving, showing the positive impact that St Mark’s has in their lives, and how much difference a scholarship can make. I warmly join our students in saying “thank you!” to all our scholarship donors.

With the end of the tax year fast approaching, I hope that everyone who is able to do so and who values what the College does for our students – and thus for society at large – will make a contribution through
Annual Giving this year and every year. Your Annual Gift, however small or large, can help to change the lives of our students.

Thank you in anticipation of your generous support.

With best wishes from the College – and please stay safe!

Professor Don Markwell
Head of College
