Goodie Bags!

The bags for our goodie bags have arrived. Are you as excited as we are? All entrants into our Stitch at Home Challenge will receive a goodie bag and we will also be passing them out to our guests at our Grand Opening Celebration. Please note that we will have a limited supply at the Grand Opening so show up early to make sure to get yours!

We want to keep the items in our goodie bags a surprise, but as a teaser, we have donations from great local establishments such as Britex Fabrics and The Ribbonerie!
Our office is also filling up with raffle prizes. Not only do we now have signed copies of Alison Cole's new stumpwork book for sale in our shop, but she has generously donated a few copies as raffle prizes.

Also up for grabs are embroidery kits from a number of talented designers including Sarah Homfray and Talliaferro, a subscription to Inspirations magazine courtesy of The Wooly Thread, various and sundry gift certificates and much more.

To RSVP for our Grand Opening Celebration, please send an email to info@sfsnad.org. We can't wait to see you there!

Sketching with Thread - Exercises in Mark Making
September 24-25th

If you are looking for an experimental class to stretch your skills, you might enjoy this one. In this class we will explore the possibilities of sketching with thread. Utilizing varying thicknesses of thread in combination with ideas taken from drawing techniques such as hatching, cross hatching, stippling and scribbling, you will learn to create value and depth at a faster pace. We will discuss how different drawing techniques are used, look at examples and work on practice exercises both with pencil and paper as well as with cloth and thread. Then we will put these ideas into practice by working on stitching a still life. In embroidery, where things are so often tight and perfect, this class will help you to develop a looser, more experimental hand.

Mountmellick Embroidery

We recently recieved a fabulous donation of Mountmellick items. The donation includes a few original sketches from Sister Teresa Margaret McCarthy, who has been described as "The pheonix behind the resurrection of Mountmellick Work." Mountmellick embroidery is a traditional Irish technique that depicts images of nature in a thick white thread on cotton jean fabric. It incorporates many interesting knotted stitches including a stitch known simply as "Mountmellick stitch."

If you are interested in learning Mountmellick embroidery, we have a class coming up on November 18th!
