Saying goodbye to summer, and hello to new opportunities at Art Sanctuary!

Art Sanctuary Family: it's that time again! Labor Day has now passed, students (including our North Stars) are back in classrooms, and summer is becoming a distant yet fond memory.

Just like all of you, our organization will be experiencing several changes in the new season. For the rest of 2018, you can look forward to:
  • Continued black art in our gallery and North Stars programming. For more information about our upcoming exhibit, keep reading!
  • Monthly re-caps of our CBA34 events. Re-live the events you loved, and read our complete break-down of what made them so special!
  • A shift to spotlighting community events. As a member of Philadelphia's extensive black art community, we serve alongside many other incredible organizations. For the rest of the year, we want to continue the great momentum and energy of CBA34 by connecting our supporters to programs throughout the year, community, and city.
  • Opportunities to plug YOUR upcoming events! Find out more about how to share your moments in black art at the end of this newsletter.
As we at prepare the next phase of our work, we first want to thank and spotlight the organizations who have made this summer and year possible.
Covered: Celebrating Muslim Women
A Series by Yusuf Abdul Jaleel

September 15—November 15, 2018
628 S 16th Street, Philadelphia, PA

On Saturday, September 15th, join Art Sanctuary as we celebrate our new exhibit, Covered: Celebrating Muslim Women. This series, created by artist Yusef Abdul Jaleel, will run from September 15th to November 15th in our gallery.

"Covered: Celebrating Muslim Women is an illustration series depicting various Muslim women of color. It was created to combat the negative stereotypes associated with modesty and covering. Muslim women are the most recognizable symbol of Islam today, and have been ridiculed and deemed “oppressed” for following guidelines mandated by their religion. It is my hope to counter these negative stereotypes by showing the variety and beauty of those who cover." —Yusef Abdul Jaleel

Join us in the gallery on 9-15 at 6pm for a first glance of the series, conversation with the artist, and light fare alongside a community of black art enthusiasts. Admission is free, and donations are welcome.
