January 9:

National Day
Against Denial

350 Pittsburgh is participating in 350.org's January 9th Day Against Denial. People in all 50 states will send a message to their US Senators: Reject Donald Trump's reckless climate-denying cabinet nominees. We want no scientific illiterates and no industry lobbyists in the White House.

First, sign our PETITION to Senators Toomey and Casey calling on them to refuse to confirm climate change deniers for the cabinet.  Then please forward it to as many people as possible and post to Facebook or your favorite media sites. Deadline: Jan 9.

Second, join us in delivering the petition to Senator Toomey's office, Mon Jan 9, 12-1 PM, Station Square. There will be a demonstration outside Toomey's office followed by the presentation of the petition. Take a bus downtown and walk across the Smithfield bridge, take the incline or the T, paddle across the river, or bicycle down Carson Street; do what it takes to BE there. Bring your signs and chants and be heard! Sign up to attend and get event details.

As of this evening, the event co-sponsors are 350 Pittsburgh, Clean Water Action, Food and Water Watch, GASP, Marcellus Protest, Moms Clean AIr Force, and Sierra Club Allegheny Group. For more information contact Peter Wray at pjwray@verizon.net.

New Campaigns
Kick Off
At Our January 12 Meeting

Start 2017 on a kick-ass note at our first general meeting of the year on Thursday, Jan 12.  Meet some climate activists and hear all about our campaigns and how to get involved:

  • Pittsburgh's First 100 Days: Events and actions to counter the damaging efforts of the Trump administration (see below).
  • 350 Pittsburgh Solar Campaign: In cooperation with Solarize Allegheny, promotes installation of solar energy on our own homes. The first workshop is Feb 2 (see below).
  • Pittsburgh Climate Action Network: A convergence of diverse grassroots groups to continue battling climate change locally.
  • Pittsburgh Divestment Coalition: Working with the Thomas Merton Center to coordinate and strengthen divestment activity at Chatham, Pitt, CMU, local philanthropies, and local pension funds.

Friends Meeting House on 4836 Ellsworth Ave., 7:00 PM.

Our New "Unite 100" campaign (for PIttsburgh's First 100 Days)

350 Pittsburgh's new campaign will focus the groundswell of energy and concern emerging in response to the new administration.  Our theme is Climate Justice = Social Justice. We are reaching out to other groups to coordinate a series of activities to highlight this connection. Interested in volunteering? Contact Kate at katefissell@gmail.com
Getting funding. The 350 Pittsburgh Unite100 Campaign is applying to the Sprout Fund's 100 Days of Us initiative. Join the 100 Days of US meet-up group to keep up with all the cool 100 Days events. Please donate to the Sprout Fund's 100 Days Environment Crowdrise fund to increase our chances of getting a grant.

Finally, join us at the Sprout 100 Days of US Ideas Party on Monday, Jan 9 on the South Side. See the pitch videos and celebrate all those who have shared ideas, donated their money and time, or applied for project support.
Be Part of the Climate Solution - Go Solar!

Solarize Allegheny and 350 Pittsburgh invite you to learn how solar energy can work for your home or business, and find out how easy and affordable solar energy has become.

Attend a Solar Workshop on Feb 2 to get an overview of solar energy, meet two local pre-screened solar installers, hear about financing that is available, and be able to request a free evaluation of your home's solar suitability and a quote through the program. (For example, learn about the URA energy loan, which offers 0% interest for people with qualifying incomes). The installers are offering a $500 discount for all signed contracts by June 16, 2017! In addition, reps from the Sound Home Plan from Conservation Consultants, Inc. will provide information about making your home more energy efficient.

Edward Burtynsky: The 'Anthropocene' Photographer

Edward Burtynsky has spent his career documenting humanity's large-scale impacts on our planet. Enormous dams, sprawling slums, plumes of pollution in river deltas, acres of oil derricks ... The photographs are stunning and deeply disturbing. Burtynsky has published a number of books and accompanying video documentaries; we recommend "Manufactured Landscapes." Or start with this recent New Yorker profile illustrated with his work.
