MAY 2020

Dear YESS community,

The spread of COVID-19 during the past few months has a strong impact in our lives and we are all facing great challenges due to it. In moments like this we believe that we can exploit all the potential of YESS to channel your science and ideas. This newsletter presents a variety of examples of the potential of our network. From promoting the participation of ECRs in international programmes to online events, our community has been actively organizing a wide range of activities during the last months and for the upcoming months.

We hope that, despite the current global scenario, this newsletter reflects the effort we put in constructing a powerful network.

Remember that you are always welcome to join us in this adventure by becoming more active in the community (e.g. by joining a Working Group)!

The Outreach Working Group

This newsletter provides insight in the latest developments of the YESS community. You will find news about:

New Executive Committee members

We are happy to announce that YESS has a new generation of Executive Committee (ExeCom) members and Regional Representatives (Reg. Reps.). Both groups were elected by the YESS Council. The ExeCom is responsible for maintaining an overview, guiding YESS activities and is the contact point for communication both within the YESS community and with external partners. The new ExeCom is:

New Regional Representatives

The YESS Council elected the Regional Representatives, who support the YESS community by sharing experience, special interests, situations, or information from their region and are responsible for the growth of YESS in their region and serve as the contact point for specific regional questions, activities and tasks. The new Reg Reps are:

YESS members selected to be part
of GASS panel activities

Last December, YESS community and the Global Atmospheric System Studies (GASS) decided to launch a call to the YESS Community for an ECRs to be appointed as a member of GASS panel. GASS is an initiative from the Global Energy and Water Exchanges (GEWEX) project of the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP). During the application period, we received 10 excellent applications from YESS members from four continents whose research backgrounds fit with the themes of the GASS panel. A committee of four YESS members evaluated the applications received and shortlisted three candidates to be considered for this position. The final selection of the candidate has been made by the GASS panel.

The GASS panel has recently made a decision and selected Dr. Carla Gulizia, from Argentina, as a new GASS panel member for the next three years. As part of her appointment, Carla will foster the connection between early career researchers, the YESS community and the GASS panel. On the other hand, YESS member Penelope Maher has been invited to be part of the GASS Project on precipitation diurnal cycle over different climate regimes. We congratulate Carla and Penelope for being elected for this position. We hope that their participation in GASS activities will encourage more ECRs to be involved in GASS activities as well as in YESS.

We would like to thank GEWEX and GASS panel, and especially GASS co-chairs Daniel Klocke and Xubin Zeng, for promoting the participation of ECRs in leadership activities and we are looking forward to participating in further ones. We also hope that in the future more international programmes and panels can follow GASS in this initiative. For years, YESS has been working hard to foster ECRs presence in international programmes. We are glad to see our efforts are being materialized.

The spread of COVID-19 during the past few weeks has a strong impact in our lives and we are all facing great challenges due to it. For years, YESS has been working to organize and enhance interactions among ECRs worldwide. In moments like this we believe that we can exploit all the potential of our platform to channel your science and ideas.

To accompany our members during these difficult times we propose the following online activities to visibilize your science but also to hear the obstacles you faced and to foster the interaction between us.

Early Career Scientist during COVID-19
Fill this survey and tell us more about your research during COVID19 crisis. The results will be used to develop a document on the impacts of COVID19 in ECRs. The deadline to submit  is May 11th.
Online resources

We created a special space in our website to list some online resources that can be useful for the YESS members during the COVID-19 crisis. It includes webinars, journals and books available for free, etc.

Virtual Coffee Break

Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday we will open a zoom room simply to chat about science, work, life or any other topic you wish to discuss while you meet other researchers. Check times and the link to the Zoom room here.

More activities will come in the next few weeks. Follow us on social media to get the last news!

Since 2018, more than one hundred international Early Career Scientists have participated in the several reviews we organized. By participating, reviewers not only get recognized as early career experts, but also gain valuable training and insight in the scientific review process for reports written for policy makers.

We are currently in the process of reviewing the IPCC AR6 WGI Second Order Draft (SOD WGI). More than 30 YESS members are taking part in the reviewing process. The deadline to the revision has been postponed until May 15th.

Due to the current situation, the IPCC has modified the date of the Working Group II – review of the SOD (the new date is December 4th 2020 – January 29th 2021)
We will contact the ECRs who have already sent their applications to inform them about the new schedule. For those who have not applied yet, we would like to let you know that the updated call will be published here and in social media, so stay tuned!

YESS aims to highlight the scientific contributions by Early Career Researchers in the community to make their work more visible and to enhance scientific interactions among community members and beyond. For this, we developed a special space in our webpage in which your contribution is shared with the community.
Find all the last publications published by YESS members here. In addition, every month we disseminate the highlights of the past month on social media.

Guidelines to submit your highlight:

  • You should be a YESS member.
  • The paper should be in the scope of interdisciplinary Earth system sciences (natural and social sciences).
  • You should be an author of the paper (lead or co-author).
  • The paper should be published within the last six months.
