Tell Us Your New Year's Lab Resolution!

We have all made a New Year's resolution in our personal lives, but have you considered making one change in your lab to make your research more sustainable? It can be as simple as shutting the sash on your fume hood, to starting a glove recycling program. Join us in our mission to create sustainable labs and share your resolution today!

The North American Laboratory Freezer Challenge

The NALFC is a competition designed to promote best practices in cold storage management. In each sector, individual labs scoring the highest number of points per number of refrigeration units will have their picture published in Nature.  Winning labs will also receive a coffee maker for their lab and a set of Freezer Challenge mugs. Don't miss out - sign up by January 31st!
A special thanks to graphic designer Amanda Le for creating the NALFC logo!

Our Green Labs Program aims to deliver projects that ensure UAlberta teaching and research labs are healthy and safe spaces supported by sustainable practices. To do this we focus on five key areas including: community building, tools to build capacity, feasibility studies, programming, and strategic leadership with the broader Green Labs community. Our program started in 2013 with the development of a checklist for certifying labs through our Green Spaces Certification Program, but it was not until Fall 2015 when we hired the Project Planner – Green Labs position that we were really able to dive in and launch our Green Labs program.

Since then, we’ve worked closely with our lab community to help support some really impactful initiatives that are helping to reduce campus energy, water, and waste while elevating the connection between safety and sustainability. Some highlights of our achievements to date include:

  • Model Green Labs project; for example, the Dyck Model Lab invested in the Wes Protein Simple machine which revolutionizes Western Blots making them more resource and time efficient
  • Creation of a Environment, Health, and Safety project team; we work very closely with our EHS team and meet with them monthly to ensure our projects align with health and safety standards
  • Acetone recycling pilot project in undergraduate organic chemistry teaching labs
  • Delivery of energy-saving Shut the Sash campaigns through partnerships with EHS, local engineering firm Aqua Air, and Energy Management and Sustainable Operations
  • ULT Freezer Rebate project (developed in partnership with preferred supplier Fisher Scientific) to incentivize the purchase of energy-efficient ULT freezers.
Special thanks to Emma Lafreniere, Green Labs Project Planner at U of A, for championing a number of high impact, very successful projects and sharing them with the green labs community!
