COMMEMORATION OF THE PROPHET JONAH

Jonah is one of the minor prophets of the Holy Bible. In the Book of Jonah of the Old Testament is a narrative describing his adventures. By the Lord’s command, Jonah was sent to Nineveh to preach to the heathens, and he tried in every way to disobey God’s command. Alas, his attempts were in vain. By the Lord’s command, a large fish swallowed Jonah, and he remained alive inside the fish for three days and three nights. Only after Jonah’s prayer and redemption did the Lord allow the fish to free Jonah. Now he obeyed the Lord’s command and went back to Nineveh. On the first day as Jonah started for the city, he proclaimed, “Forty more days and Nineveh will be overturned.” The Ninevites fervently believed in God, thus they declared a fast. And all of them, from the least to the greatest among them, even the king, put on sackcloth. When God saw what they had done and how they had turned away from their evil ways, he had compassion upon them and did not bring upon them the destruction he had previously threatened.

Later, Christ cited the example of Jonah to the Pharisees when they asked for a divine sign, and the Armenian Apostolic Church always commemorates the memory of the Prophet Jonah during the Fast of Catechumens to symbolize that with sincere repentance one may deserve God’s mercy.

FAMILY PROMISE - VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

For a family with young children facing homelessness, every day can be overwhelming and frightening. Support and generosity from members of the community can provide these families with hope, strength and inspiration …and the opportunity to regain self-sufficiency. Many families have become homeless due to a housing, health care, or financial crisis.  They've exhausted their network of family and friends they can turn to for help.

St. James is a founding church member of Family Promise Chicago North Shore, which provides emergency shelter and meals, and a supported pathway to self-sufficiency. St James doesn’t have the facilities to shelter these families, but partners with Grace Lutheran and other area churches who do. Our amazing cooks provide meals during the weeks families live at Grace Lutheran in Evanston. The week of February 5th will be our first week of services in 2017.

If you can cook or help serve meals that week, please contact Kathy Green: 847-733-8877. She is our outreach coordinator for Family Promise. Thank you in advance for your kindness.

THANK YOU NOTES

The Parish Council would like to thank the St. James Sunday School students for brightening the lives of our many parishioners and friends who have been on our prayer list due to illness. We appreciate the time that the students took to write get-well cards and good wishes to these individuals and hope they bring happiness and comfort to each recipient. These cards were blessed at the end of the Divine Liturgy.  We pray that all our students continue to develop into caring and loving members of our parish.

Der Hovhan and the Parish Council would like to thank Boghos and Harout Sarkisian at American Parking Service for donating valet parking service for the past few weeks. This important service allowed parishioners to arrive on time and not have to spend time looking for parking. It also made coming to church safer for our older parishioners who did not have to walk several blocks on treacherous winter sidewalks. God bless the Sarkisian family for their kindness.

NEW WINDOWS FOR NISHAN HALL

Through the generous donation of In Lieu Funds in memory of their departed loved ones, the families of the dearly departed chose to use the funds to replace the windows on the east side of Nishan Hall, the window above the water cooler and the window in the choir room.

We, the parishioners of St. James Armenian Church of Evanston thank the families for their generosity in Memory of Sona Artinyan, Arshaluis Elmayian, Vartkez Tokat,  and Mari Yegiyayan.

HOME BLESSING

NEW EPISODE OF THE DIOCESE'S VIDEO SERIES

How Did Christianity First Reach Armenia?Everyone knows that Armenia became the world’s first Christian nation in 301 A.D. But it was a long journey from the Holy Land to the Ararat Valley. How did this faith first reach our homeland?

The story of Armenia’s conversion to Christianity is the theme for the second season of the Diocese’s video series, “Bread and Salt: Stories from the Armenian Church.”

The first episode, titled “Tongues of Fire,” introduces us to the two Apostles who carried the religion of Christ into Armenia. Future episodes will portray the heroic stories of saints Hripsime and Gayane, St. Gregory, King Drtad, and the other figures who shaped the history of early Christian Armenia.

Click here to view “Tongues of Fire,” and stay tuned for more in the months to come.
