October/ November 2019

Welcome to The Aisling Irish Community Center's Newsletter. It's been a busy time for us here on McLean Ave from organizing our marathon team to our annual dinner dance. We hope you enjoy catching up on everything that has being going on!

Team Aisling Run up a Storm

This year around 1,500 runners took part in the Yonkers Marathon, most famously known as the second oldest marathon in America.

Runners from all over Yonkers, the Bronx and even as far as Queens and Rockland County, rose at the crack of dawn last Sunday October 20th to participate in the 94th Yonkers Marathon.  We are delighted to say that the center's very own dedicated running team of more than 500 turned out in style and all had wonderful day.  Started last year, the group which is known as Team Aisling, was set up to encourage fun, fitness and comradery within the community.

The atmosphere on the day of the race was exceptional and standing by the finish line it was hard to miss the sea of orange that was Team Aisling coming over the hill. A well deserved after party was generously hosted by at Rory Dolan's that evening, a fun conclusion to a great event.

To everyone who signed up and helped in anyway shape or form, thank you from all of us here at the center. A huge thank you also goes to Patricia Brady and all the staff at Francey Brady's who welcomed Team Aisling in for food and drink and a place to set up before the race started.

A Leap of Faith

We're delighted to announce that The Aisling Center is partnering with the Irish Consulate for the US book launch of Presbyterian David Latimer's novel, a Leap of Faith.

"In spring 2006 David Latimer’s church was paint bombed yet again, tired of this he decided to go public about the attacks. Live on Radio Foyle he appealed to Martin McGuinness to help, believing that he was the only man in the city who could protect the church. Little did David expect that Martin McGuinness would be at the church within a few hours, and that this first meeting would mark the beginning of a remarkable relationship that evolved and developed over the next eleven years. In A Leap of Faith, David tells how that meeting led to a strong and lasting friendship that was as close as it was unexpected, and that was cemented by their joint commitment to peace building and improving the lives of Northern Ireland’s young people."

The Center's very own Céilí band will also be performing on the night of the launch. The best of luck to them!
