MARCH 2017
THEGROUNDUP
Welcome to The Ground Up, Red Meat Profit Partnership's e-upate to our sector.  This has now become a monthly update rather than bi-monthly because there is so much going on within the Programme and at such a rapid pace, we want to keep you up to date!  We encourage you to forward this on to your colleagues, clients and friends who may be interested in the work we are doing.
In The News
Results from our pilot farmer programme
The evaluation of all of the results from our first year trial with 75 farmers looking at different approaches to how farmers learn is now complete.  Results from these evaluations are being sent by mail to all sheep and beef farmers in New Zealand over the next two days.  Below is a snapshot of some of these results

We are looking forward to hosting over 150 farmers and rural professionals at our National Farmer Workshop this week in Christchurch.   This will be an opportunity to learn more about what successes and challenges they have had during the past year as part of the trial.  We will also be working together to shape what the future may look like in terms of rolling out nationally what we have learnt from both our pilot farmer programme and high performing farmer research.

Farming businesses who are interested in being involved can now register their interest on our website here.   We will keep in touch with these farmers as we confirm what the programme involves over the coming weeks.

NCEA resources now available in schools
Late last year NZQA approved a number of resources to be utilised in schools by teachers.   This is nothing new for NZQA but what is fantastic is that these resources are to be used in subjects like maths, science and english and they have real agricultural examples at their heart.  This is a huge boost for schools, due to the ease of use of the resources and also to our sector as more students will now have the opportunity to learn more about the huge range of topics that agriculture covers.  To read more, click here

The NZ Red Meat Story
Our natural farming systems, quality and audit controls and our beautiful landscape are important attributes of NZ's red meat products.  We need to tell this story to consumers wherever they are.  We are working with Beef + Lamb New Zealand and sector stakeholders to help create this red meat sector story to boost the demand for our red meat products.  Just last week a number of stakeholders came together in Wellington to look at what the NZ Red Meat Story might look like in practice. You can read more about how we link in with this important piece of work here.

Hot off the press!
Two new publications have been produced recently by RMPP.   The 'Farmer Update, March 2017' is currently being mailed out to all NZ sheep and beef farmers.   Our Trial Farmer Booklet is also ready for distribution to those who are interested in looking at what our pilot farmers have been achieving.   If you would like copies of either of these publications please click here

RMPP is expanding!
Due to the significant amount of large projects we have coming up, we are looking for more staff. If you know of anyone who may be interested in any of the three positions advertised here, please feel free to forward on this newsletter.

Megan Mounsey-Smith

Q&A - Richard Fitzgerald, Extension Project Manager

I have been part of the RMPP team since mid-2015 where I have overseen the Extension Design project as Project Lead.  My wife Ruth and I own an intensive mixed cropping farm with an irrigated sheep and beef finishing unit near Methven.

What does your role involve?
My role is to ensure that the activities amongst the pilot farmers and meat company representatives are linked to the wider RMPP activities, and that we are learning as much as possible from the evaluation process to carry forward when rolling out the national extension programme.

What do you most enjoy about working for RMPP?
The satisfaction that when we get this right, the programme will have a widespread, and long-lasting positive impact on thousands of sheep and beef farmers.
