Congratulations and well done to our own Sandy Atkinson who is retiring from Calgary Opera this evening after a long and successful career. On behalf of Calgarians, thank you for all the music! On behalf of Woodcliff, congratulations and thank heavens you are not retiring from WUC! We are so proud of you, Sandy and we send our love and very best wishes to you tonight as you deservedly celebrate a wonderful career with the opera.
The Count Team is looking for a few more members. The team is made up of groups of 3-4 people (2 of whom must not be related). Groups are responsible for sorting and counting up the offering at the end of each service. This takes about 30-45 minutes after the service. Each group typically does this for a 3 week block, twice a year. If you can join the team either as a group member, or even to fill in once in awhile, we'd love to see you!' Please contact Kathleen at woodcliffcount@gmail.com
This coming Sunday, February 9th, the Children and Youth Ministries will be holding their fourth annual HUGS and Kisses event! During their gathering time, the children and youth will be assembling candy bags for the Drop in Centre. You are invited to contribute too by bringing new HUGS (that's Hats, Underwear, Socks and/or Gloves) to donate to the DI. These are items are desperately needed by the clients the DI serves. Treats for your Valentine will also be available for purchase, with the proceeds going to the DI. Thank you for supporting this sweet initiative!
Secret Pals returns to Woodcliff. What is Secret Pals? We're glad you asked! It's a fun pen pal style program that connects young and old. Each 'pal' receives a number. Each number will be connected to another number and using only those numbers to address each other, pals will leave notes of encouragement, cards, small treats in the Secret Pal Mail throughout Lent. Secret Pals will be revealed to each other on Easter Sunday. We need both children and adults to sign up for this fun filled event to be successful! Sign up is in the Narthex.
We want to hear from you! In an effort to expand our programming and fill the needs of our community we are seeking input on offerings that would appeal to you. There are hard copy surveys available in the Narthex at Woodcliff or you can click the link below and print off a survey and return it to the church. Thank you for your ideas!
We are currently looking for folks who would like to read Scripture, lead the prayers of the People and to assist with serving communion. The way in which you may sign up is through SignUp.com.  Please see the instructions below:

Sadly, we have had a number of thefts this winter. If you are hanging your jacket up, please do not leave car keys or wallets in the pockets and please keep purses and bags with you.
Regenerate is a new type of worship service to Woodcliff. It's a gathering of people who come together to share a meal, ponder scripture, and explore the stories of the Bible in a hands on way. This worship style has no barriers to experience. Families can worship together with their children. Young and old can come together in a safe space for all. This service will take place monthly in the Lower Hall on the last Sunday of the month from 5:30-6:30 pm.
In February, we will be looking at our theme for lent - Reflecting on Relationships. We will explore, through stories and stations, our relationships with others, the planet, and our selves. We will enter into the night with a traditional start of Lent meal -  pancakes... plus a few modern comforts of breakfast for dinner.
As a kick off to Lent, Congregational Life will be hosting a movie and dinner night. The movie will be Wall-E, which has incredible messages for all about how to live with respect for creation. Some have said it's the most biblical Pixar film of all time. Many have said that even as an adult, the messaging will hit your heartstrings. There will be accessible earth friendly activities & crafts, thought provoking pondering and a waste free meal in honour of our world. All are invited. Sign up in the Narthex starting this Sunday. $10 for individuals, $25 for families.

12th Annual Valentine’s Day Women’s Memorial March
Friday, February 14, 2020, will mark Calgary’s 12th Annual Valentine’s Day Women’s Memorial March. The event will take place at Scarboro United Church and will begin at 6:30pm with presentations and performances. The march will begin at 7pm with light refreshments served after.

The Memorial March works to raise awareness and inspire change in regards to violence against women.

Although gendered violence affects all women, Indigenous women face compounded and unique risks. The Valentine’s Day Women’s Memorial March planning committee has shared the following facts:
• A vast majority of Indigenous women have been assaulted. Violence may have begun while at residential school or by parents whose souls were damaged by the residential school experience of rape, physical abuse, and cultural genocide. Violence continues into adulthood, ranging from 48% to up to 90% of Indigenous women being assaulted at the hands of their partners, depending on the community in which they live.
• Indigenous women also experience racially-motivated attacks and are harassed on the streets by the public and police in far greater numbers than non-Indigenous women.
• Indigenous women are five times more likely to die because of violence than any other group of women in Canada.
• Unlike most women who are at a greater risk of being assaulted by an intimate partner, Indigenous women are equally at risk of being assaulted by a stranger– this is a clear indication of the racist and sexist underpinnings of violence against Indigenous women.
• Because of the continuing effects of the Indian Act, Indigenous women face insecurities related to housing, employment and access to services both on and off reserve, leaving them more vulnerable to violence.

Please join us, everyone is welcome.

Fish Creek Environmental Learning Centre
13931 Woodpath Rd. SW

Writing-on-Stone/Áísínai’pi is a continuous and sacred cultural landscape. The site was inscribed on July 6, 2019 as Canada’s 20th UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Blackfoot name for this sacred cultural landscape is Áísínai’pi (meaning, “it is pictured/it is written”) and refers to the abundance and diversity of rock art at this spectacular site, as well as the geological features and viewscapes that are imbedded with sacred oral traditions.
Many Indigenous traditions continue to be practiced at Writing-on-Stone/Áísínai’pi today, and the ancient tradition of knowledge transmission continues to connect people with the past and informs their future.
Join Aaron Domes and Saa’kokoto (Randy Bottle) to learn about the rich history and values that make Writing-on-Stone / Áísínai’pi special, and receive valuable insider knowledge to help you plan your trip!

WHAT IS CAMP?

When you first arrive at Pearce Williams Camp in Fingal, Ontario, you immediately encounter a feeling of the sacred. Walking around the grounds, that feeling transforms into the knowledge that God is up to something amazing here. Pearce Williams is a place where there is room for all to be cradled in God’s love.

At the camp, children gain self-esteem, confidence, independence, and many more life skills that will help them succeed. Summer camp helps children develop into leaders, thinkers, and doers; it helps them discover who they are away from their everyday lives. Above all else, camp gives children a fun space to grow.

Mission & Service supports United Church camps like Pearce Williams.

If Mission & Service giving is already a regular part of your life, thank you so much! If you have not given, please join me in making Mission & Service giving a regular part of your life of faith. Loving our neighbour is at the heart of our Mission & Service.
