Summer is here!

Yesterday was the longest day of the year. Summer is upon us. There are other signs summer is here as well.  Mike had the tent trailer up, giving it a good cleaning so it is ready to go when we are. He found a few things in it that have been missing since last summer that he gleefully showed me the minute I walked into the house. We laughed together as we remembered our last camping trip.  The garden is growing like crazy. I added some stakes for the peas to climb on. At church I've been attending the last meeting before the summer break for many committees. There is talk of upcoming vacations and family visits. Everything is just a little more relaxed.

In the midst of all this there is a sense of upcoming changes at Woodcliff.  I am gradually taking things home that have been living in my office since January. I'm going through the files and sorting things. The recycle bin is a little bit fuller than usual. It is hard to believe but my last Sunday is two days away. How time flies when you are having fun!

It has been a fun six months. Meeting you has been such a gift and a blessing. Sharing time together, learning a little bit about your lives and your hopes and dreams has been such a privilege. But life is about change. As the season shifts from spring to summer, so too the season is changing at Woodcliff. You are shifting from a time of transition in ministry to a time of welcoming and getting to know your new minister, called to serve together with you starting July 1st. In the lazy days of summer, know there are new seeds growing here at Woodcliff along with the many perennials and trees that are rooted here already. May the garden of Woodcliff flourish and grow and bloom abundantly. This summer may you flourish as well in the warmth of God's every present love. May the living water of Christ refresh your soul and may the lively breeze of the Spirit rustle and dance and bring you joy.

I hope I'll see many of you this Sunday as we gather together to worship and to share in a hot dog or two afterwards. We'll celebrate our church and the many ways we grow together. We'll laugh and sing and say a prayer. We will greet one another in Christ's name. If you can't be there, know that you are in our hearts and are part of the circle.

May the peace of Christ be with you! Amen

We are together on the journey of faith and love, Rev. Debbie

The Mohawk words “Akwe Nia’Tetewá:neren” (in English, “All My Relations”) were added to The United Church of Canada’s crest in 2012, recognizing that we are all connected to each other and all of creation.

recent visit from the Uniting Church in Australia’s Aboriginal and Islander Christian Congress demonstrated the truth of this phrase. The visit was part of a dialogue on reconciliation between our two countries and churches. A return visit from Canada took place in March 2018.

The Australians arrived in Vancouver, British Columbia, and after exploring its urban Indigenous context, were scheduled to fly up the coast to the Indigenous community of Bella Coola. The United Churches there had worked to ensure a meaningful visit, but wildfires intervened. Concerned that the community might need to provide refuge for those displaced by fire, everyone reluctantly decided to cancel the visit.

Several phone calls later, friends in Peepeekisis and Carry the Kettle First Nations in Saskatchewan helped out with “Plan B.” The warmth with which the visitors were received was overwhelming. In Peepeekisis, after a brief service in the beloved old church, everyone was invited to a community feast, where the Australian guests participated in sacred ceremony. At Carry the Kettle, a visit to the annual powwow turned into the Australians being part of the Grand Entry—an incredible honour, and an experience that most will likely never have again.

This happened because of a simple recognition, that no matter how far apart we are, we are all connected; we are all relatives.

If Mission & Service giving is already a regular part of your life, thank you so much! If you have not given, please join me in making Mission & Service giving a regular part of your life of faith. Loving our neighbour is at the heart of our Mission & Service.
