Woodcliff will be hosting a “Blue Christmas” service on December 20th at 6:30PM. It is meant to be a compassionate and intimate gathering of worshippers.  I believe that we can recognize that the Christmas season is not happy or life-giving for all people.  The purpose of a Blue Christmas service is to share love and support with those of us who feel like the holidays are a heavy blanket, keeping us suppressed and unable to fully engage with our friends and family.
I want to note that this Blue Christmas service will not be a “cure all”.  Nor is this service meant to transform blues into someone who lives and breathes Christmas.  This service is one of solidarity. Where we can come together as human beings to show our support and compassion for those who have sought out this service. In having this worship service, we show that we acknowledge that the holidays are not perfect, and that we want to meet people where they are.
If you know of someone who may be interested in or may benefit from this service, please invite them to Woodcliff United Church on December 20th at 6:30PM.
There will be music, prayers, candles, video and reflections as we share our lives with one another.
Rev. Eric

Advent Gift Card Tree for Brenda’s House and Sonshine Centre
(transitional housing for families facing homelessness & temporary housing for women & their children fleeing domestic abuse)
Giving gift cards to these families enables them to purchase gifts for their children at Christmas or throughout the year. Please place a cash or gift card donation in the box in the foyer. For every donation an ornament will be added to our tree. During the week, donations may be left in the office or placed in an envelope and slipped under the door. Gift cards, in any amount, from local businesses such as Superstore, Safeway, Shoppers Drug Mart, Wal-Mart, or even movie passes would be suitable. We hope the tree in the foyer is full of ornaments by Dec 25!
Cash donations will be used by these agencies for special outings for the children such swimming at a city pool, a trip to the zoo etc. or gift cards as needed.
* only cash donations of $20 or more are eligible for a tax receipt from Woodcliff

In China, the Amity Foundation offers programs for people on the margins—people like Zhou Jian, a 34-year-old baker who has been working at the Amity Bakery since it opened in 2007. As a child, Zhou Jian was placed in an institution where he stayed until 2004, when he was given the opportunity to live at Amity Foundation’s Home of Blessings for those who are developmentally challenged. When he arrived at the home at age 21, he did not understand the concept of words or numbers. Slowly, under the loving care of Amity teachers, he mastered these skills. Zhou Jian was then ready to take on another challenge by working in the bakery. He has grown in skill to become one of the main bakers.

Zhou Jian is constantly learning new techniques, proudly mastering each new challenge. He displays so much pride in the mouth-watering baked goods he produces that he has become the face of the Amity Bakery. His smiling face can now be seen on billboards and posters around China!

At the Amity Foundation’s 30th anniversary celebration in 2015, it was Zhou Jian who welcomed everyone and invited the guests to taste the cake that he and the other bakers had so lovingly prepared. We are thankful for the loving way that the Amity Foundation offers developmentally challenged individuals like him the opportunity to live out their passion for creating and learning. As we live out our faith of loving our neighbour, we do so in celebration of Mission & Service global partners like Amity Foundation.

If Mission & Service giving is already a regular part of your life, thank you so much! If you have not given, please join me in making Mission & Service giving a regular part of your life of faith. Loving our neighbour is at the heart of our Mission & Service.
