Economic Empowerment for Indigenous Women
In Guatemala, our gifts for Mission & Service support the ministry of the Fraternidad de Presbiteriales Mayas (FPM), or Women’s Network of Maya Presbyterials, which provides Indigenous women in the area with microcredit loans so they can set up their own businesses and become economically independent.
One group FPM supports is called Nuevo Esperanza (New Hope). Located just outside Quetzaltenango, the women in this group make chocolate and operate a bakery and a small restaurant. Guatemala has one of the largest Indigenous populations by percentage in Latin America. Argelia Poz, Executive Director of FPM, says it is important to work with Indigenous women to improve their families’ economic well-being and to strengthen the voices of women in church and society.
