Say Yes to Happiness Newsletter

Grounding: The Power of Stillness

Let me begin by announcing there will be an updated newsletter in your inbox next week! As happiness skills and practices take on a life of their own out in the world, change becomes a part of that journey! I am grateful to have two new wonderful team members, Sophia and Kelsey to bring creativity and vision to spreading the learning of sustainable happiness skills for everyone. Their fresh design is here just in time, and phew, I needed the help!

The things we need show up when we ask the universe, or God, or the angels, for support in living a life of fulfillment and purpose.

Now, on to the power of stillness! This is a topic that requires clear intention in todays world. I want to share two pages from Say Yes to Happiness, a Handbook for Life which addresses this, from the BODY 2 section, pages 97-98.

"I have a real problem with stillness. With just stopping and being quiet."

—Gillian Anderson

Does Gillian sound like you? If so, you are not alone. We have created a world of doing and overdoing. The incessant stimulation of digital media is rather like a continuous knocking at the door, relentlessly tugging at our attention. So, yes, being quiet can be a real challenge and even frightening to some people.

It’s OK; you can change this. “Why would I,” you ask?

Because you aren’t as happy as you’d like to be, which is why you are reading this handbook.

No matter what we have created and injected into our culture, the human being stays the same. Being grounded and being still are nourishing, nurturing forces in our lives. Our heart being, our mind being, our soul being, our physical being, our human being.

Think of a time when you watched a sunrise or sunset. Do you remember the quiet? The simple peace in the stillness? Perhaps you sat watching the waves come in along the beach or stood quietly outside feeling a breeze on your face. It was a moment of stillness, and you were left with a sense of ease. You were connected to the calm; you were grounded.

In the ease is nourishment for your happiness. It’s that simple.

"Learning how to be still, to really be still and let life happen—that stillness becomes a radiance."

—Morgan Freeman

Mountain Pose

If you are a yoga practitioner, you are already familiar with Mountain Pose. Standing with your feet shoulder-width apart, toes pointed forward, and feet parallel, evenly distribute your weight between your feet.

Rock back and forth on your feet, settling into the center of each foot. Flex your knees and simply drop into this pose, letting yourself release into the earth. With knees and hips released, bounce gently up and down as you settle into your feet comfortably. Now, as you are still, notice what you feel.

You are supported here. Close your eyes if you like, and be in this stillness for sixty seconds, breathing slowly, deeply. Go longer if you wish! Enjoy this place.

The point is to ground yourself as you are balanced on your feet, simply standing in Mountain Pose. In doing this, you notice the power of simplicity.

Lie on the Ground

Yep, that’s all there is to it, just lie down on the ground. The idea is to connect with mother earth and drop yourself into her supportive embrace, letting the earth hold you. It’s a feeling of being totally supported and, yes, grounded! You may want to have something to lie on such as a towel, or my favorite way is to lie directly on the ground, feeling the connection to the earth fully. You choose. Lying on concrete works too, and when it's warmed by the sun, the heat under you can feel grounding too. Experiment and find your favorite way to lie on the ground.

These are two of the four happiness skills I share in the BODY 2. section. If you'd like to order the book, please visit my website at and click on the "BOOK" tab. I recommend the spiral edition as it's easy to lay flat for writing.

In September I will begin a live Saturday morning call group on the second Saturday of each month, at 9:00 am PT. To begin with, this will be a small, twelve person group for the purpose of learning and sharing about happiness skills and practices. I will be teaching on the call, and there will be time for participants to ask questions too. The cost for this is $59 a month. If you would like to be included in this group, please email me at and I will send you sign up information.

With only twelve openings in the group, you may want to take action on this soon. If you have to miss a call, there will be a recording that you can listen to afterward. My very talented staff is working out the details now, and I will be updating those who reserve their spots as the call details are finalized.

Wishing you a happy new month of exploring grounding and stillness.

Love and light always,
