Changes to Alexandria Library Services Starting October 1, 2020
As the library continues to operate with reduced services - while still in Phase Three of its reopening plan - we are making changes to better adapt to the needs of our customers.

Auto-renewals for physical items will be turned on beginning October 1.
No longer will you need to manually renew eligible items before they are due. Borrowed items will be renewed automatically on the due date, with some exceptions.  Items will not be renewed if:
  • The item is on hold or requested by another customer.
  • The item reached its maximum number of renewals (up to 3 times for most items)
  • Your account is blocked due to billed items or fines of $10 or more
  • The item is a digital item, such as an eBook or eAudiobook
  • You checked out the item using your student card or educator card
  • Items borrowed from other libraries are not included in this service since they are subject to the renewal policies of the lending institution.
The auto-renewal system will renew eligible borrowed items on the due date. You can check your due dates via courtesy email notices, via your online account and by calling your local branch.

Digital Access with Physical Item Limits
The library has limits on the number of physical items that can be checked out by customers at any one time.  Up until now, the limits also restricted digital access.  The library has decided to allow customers to borrow e-materials and use most databases during the time physical items are in quarantine or over the checkout limit. Digital access will still be restricted if your account is blocked by fines or fees over $10.

Temporary cards will be extended to March 31, 2021.
As many of our customers who received temporary cards during the closure still struggle with the need to stay home for their safety, we are extending the temporary cards through March 2021.  Those who are able to come into the branch or come to curbside, may have their cards converted to permanent cards.

Talking Books Moves to Appointments Only
To access Talking Books at the Beatley Central Library, you will now need to have an appointment.  Appointments are available Monday through Thursday from 11 am to 3 pm.  Please call 703-746-1760 to reserve a time.

Updated Quarantine Period
Due to a recent REALM study, the library is quarantining returned materials for at least 7 days.  We have updated our notification and billing systems to allow for this period to stop fines accruing on customers’ accounts while they await check-in.

Cash Handling
Our library branches will begin accepting cash payments for printing, fines, fees and other services on October 1.

Printing Fees
Payment for printing will resume on October 1.  Printing is 25 cents per printed side (black and white only). Scanning can be done and saved to a flash drive or emailed at no charge.

Amnesty Ending
Amnesty is still scheduled to end on September 30. Fines will resume for any material that is returned late (past due date) or returned damaged:

Thermal Cameras
Thermal cameras can now be checked out.  They will undergo cleaning upon return.  Regular checkout periods and fees do apply.  For more information:

American Girl™ Dolls
American Girl™ Dolls are still unable to be checked out, however you can join us for a monthly American Girl program hosted on our YouTube channel.
