Dear Book Club Members,

Autumn is a great time to live along the shoreline, isn't it? It is also a great time to fall into fiction, and RJ Julia wants you to do just that! On Sunday, October 23, we are inviting you to join us at Books By The Sea, a full day of events that are sure to inspire any book club. Whether you come with your club or come to find one, we are planning a wonderful day. Publishing representatives will present the newest reads, and booksellers will be on hand to share their favorites and give exclusive behind-the-scenes tours. As the Book Club Coordinator, I’ll be available to answer questions and place orders. Additional details below!

In other news, I was so happy to welcome the Hot Off The Press book club back in person last month. What a pleasure to mingle with happy readers gathering to share books! We have three groups back in store as of October, and several more open to the public but meeting virtually. Dates and times can be found on our website. In-store book club selections include:

RJ Julia Book Clubs meeting out of store will be reading:

Since several of our groups have opted to continue meeting virtually, we can now offer space to one or two new groups. RJ Julia supports in-store book clubs by offering space for a set day of the month (e.g. 1st Monday) and ordering books in advance so we can pass on a discount. The book club leader is in charge of conferring with members and placing orders a minimum of two weeks before needed. In-store clubs are open to the public. If you have an idea and would like to head up a club, please contact me at by Friday, 10/21 to discuss.

The cool weather has definitely jump-started my reading. I recently read Haven and A Single Rose. Both had much to recommend, but both left me with questions and I would have loved a group to discuss them with. I also did a “power read” of Soon Wiley’s When We Fell Apart (a book in a day – just what I need every once in a while!) and loved being pulled into a place unfamiliar to me. Vividly drawn characters with competing inner and outer lives, elements of coming of age, and of an outsider flung into a mystery – I highly recommend it!

My current book is John Irving’s upcoming release, The Last Chairlift. This is a literal doorstop of a book but don’t be put off. I’m two sections in and haven’t found a wasted page. Does any author do a better job of drawing such intriguing, believable but larger-than-life characters? I look forward to the end of each day so I can jump back into this world of winter sports and flawed but loving families. It would make a fabulous book club read for January – members could take their time over the holiday season, enjoying their families as well as the one Irving created, and jump into a new year with a sure-to-be-talked-about book under their belts.

As always, I am here to talk about all things book club! The easiest way to reach me is by writing

When Ohio-born Pru Steiner arrives in New York in 1976, she follows in a long tradition of young people determined to take the city by storm.
