WELCOME TO INNIS!

The best way to begin to get involved with the Innis College community as a new student is through Innis Orientation Week, which will be held September 5-9, 2016.

Check out the video and FAQs on our website to get a glimpse of what’s in store at “INto the Wild” this year! If you haven’t done so already, register here. It’s not too late, but do it quickly! If you cannot access the sign-up document, or have any other inquiries, please email orientation.innis@gmail.com. You can also like our Facebook page to stay updated.

OFFICE OF STUDENT LIFE

On behalf of everyone here at Innis College, the Dean of Students and the team in the Office of Student Life would like to welcome you to the UofT community! We hope you've had a wonderful summer and are now preparing for the coming term: new classes, new friends, new experiences! Throughout your Orientation Week, our staff & administration, student leaders, and upper year mentors will be on hand to answer all your questions.

Getting involved in Orientation Week is where the learning starts!

Your Office of Student Life (OSL) at Innis College is located on the ground floor inside the Innis Residence, directly across the street from the College building. The Dean of Students and his administrative team, support the work of the Innis College Student Society, the Innis Residence Council, the Residence Dons, and our upper-year student leaders. The OSL also provides life-skill workshops, leadership opportunities, and community events in the areas of:
  • Academic Skills for Success
  • Arts & Culture
  • Career Exploration
  • Diversity & Service
  • Health & Wellness
  • International Experience Programming
  • Leadership Skills
  • Mentorship Opportunities
You can reach the OSL by email at studentlife.innis@utoronto.ca, on our website, and on our Facebook group. Have questions? Need to talk to someone? Come visit Sarah or Sonja directly in the office in the Innis Residence!

Sarah Burley Hollows, the Assistant Dean, Student Life, works with the ICSS and our Innis student leaders to locally support all of our Innis students (both commuters and residents), providing them with information, resources, and assistance in navigating the University to ensure your undergraduate years are successful and meaningful to your future career.

INNIS COLLEGE STUDENT SOCIETY

Welcome to Innis! It is my sincere pleasure to be the President of the Innis College Student Society (ICSS), the autonomous student body government that represents Innis students. Innis is a warm and diverse community filled with many resources and services for our students, whether it is from our Registrar, our Office of Student Life, or us—your elected representatives.

The ICSS’s primary mandate is to provide events and services for Innis students. We understand that our students have diverse interests and needs. So we work our hardest to host an array of events and keep them accessible for all. Our council has many representatives, who are elected by YOU!

If you are interested in getting involved with the ICSS, the Fall By-Election nomination period begins during Orientation Week. We have three positions for first year students—First Year Innis Residence Representative, First Year Chestnut Residence Representative, and First Year Commuter Representative. These positions ensure that there are first year voices heard on council, and they give first years the opportunity to host events.

Please do not hesitate to email me if you have any questions, ideas, or just want to chat! You can reach me at thepresident.icss@gmail.com.

I'm excited to meet you all!

Brianne Katz-Griffin
President, Innis College Student Society

INNIS CLUBS FAIR

Tuesday, September 6 from 1:30-3:30 PM
Innis Residence Events Room

Love board games, tea, music jamming, trivia, singing, photography, or graphic design? There are Innis clubs for each! ...and look out for exciting new clubs starting the year!

Check out the Innis Clubs Fair during Orientation Week for more information on each club. If you have an idea for a new club at Innis that you would like to create, email your ICSS Clubs & Merchandise Director, James Chapman, at clubsandmerch.icss@gmail.com.

INNIS InSIGHT

The InSIGHT Mentorship Committee provides a platform that fosters both academic and personal growth for students through different workshops and events. We also aim to smooth the transition from high school to university for first year students by organizing a mentorship system that matches first year students with upper years. Our goal is that everyone from Innis can enjoy a meaningful experience at Innis and UofT!

Find us at the Innis Clubs Fair to learn how you can gain a mentor with InSIGHT, and learn about InSIGHT events on our Facebook group

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

The International Committee is comprised of the Innis Transition and Support Don, Patrick, and two International Committee Co-Chairs, Sarah and Judy. Together they are here to aid in the smooth transition of international students to Innis, AND to provide cross-cultural programming to all Innis students, international and domestic! This year we are excited to bring to you our “Canadian Conversations” series. Come meet us at the Innis Clubs Fair during Orientation, join our committee, and come to our informational and social events starting in September!

Save the Date: Welcome Dinner for International Students on September 19

COMMUTING STUDENTS

Over 75% of UofT students make the commute to campus each day, and we’re here to help! We can provide information and resources to assist you in managing your time, money, and energy as you make the trip downtown. Commuting students are vital to the programs and services that we offer through the OSL and the ICSS, which we strongly encourage all of our Innis students to participate in. At Innis, we strive to make our spaces as commuter-friendly as possible.

Join the Innis Commuters Facebook Group! This is a place for your fellow Innis Commuters to discuss any concerns, be updated about the latest Innis events, and to meet more commuters!

RESIDENCE LIFE

If you are living in the Innis Residence this year, check out the Residence website for important information on what to bring and Move-in Day information! You’ll also get an e-mail from us during the first week of September telling you who your suitemates will be and what room you will be in.

It's essential to stay connected to what’s going on by joining the Innis Residence Facebook Group

Email any questions to Jordan MacQuarrie, Assistant Dean - Admissions & Administration, at residence.innis@utoronto.ca or call the Residence Front Desk at +1 (416) 978-2512.

Sonja Smiljanic, the Residence Life Coordinator, also lives in the Innis Residence and, together with the Residence Dons, House Reps, and the Innis Residence Council, oversees residence life in accordance with the goals of the Residence, with a specific focus on developing a strong residence life community.
Living in the Chestnut Residence this year? You are still very much a part of the Innis community! So, don't forget to register for Orientation Week, and be mindful of your Move-in Days on September 4 and 5.

INNIS RESIDENCE COUNCIL

Hey Innis! I'm Joel, the President of the Innis Residence Council (IRC) and Lead Front Desk of Innis Residence for next year! I'm originally from the small town of Wallaceburg, Ontario and I'm currently headed into my 3rd year majoring in Computer Science.

During my first year I decided to become involved with some of the smaller initatives here at Innis, most notably as a Junior House Representative on the IRC. Fast-forward 2 years and I'm now heading the council that got me started!

There is no shortage of opportunities here at Innis and at UofT in general. There’s something for everyone if you just look hard enough! I am most grateful, however, for the friendships that I’ve made through the opportunities that I’ve had. Our titles may change, but our friends are what we take with us.

I'm so excited to meet all of you as we start the 2016/2017 year together. I think I can speak on behalf of all of our student leaders when I say that we have an exceptional year ahead of us! See you soon!
