The CHLI’s Welcome Reception for the 115th Congress

February 14, 2017 - Washington, D.C – On January 31, 2017, the Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute (CHLI) hosted its Welcome Reception for the 115th Congress at Altria in Washington, D.C. Members of Congress, CHLI Board of Directors, and CHLI Corporate Advisory Council members were joined by national Hispanic leaders, sponsors and friends to welcome the Members of the 115th U.S. Congress.

The evening commenced with CHLI Chairman, the Honorable Lincoln Diaz-Balart, welcoming the over 250 guests in attendance, including Members of Congress, Ambassadors from Kosovo, Spain, and Paraguay, as well as Representatives from Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office (TECRO).

On behalf of the CHLI Board of Directors, CHLI Chairman Diaz-Balart stated that, "We are touched by the fact that CHLI was able to play a part in over 200 young people today having extraordinary careers in both the public and private sectors in our country."

CHLI’s Vice-Chairman, Congressman Henry Cuellar (TX-28) remarked on the continuous growth of the Hispanic community and why CHLI is a “great anchor to have,” pointing out the importance of having an organization, like CHLI, that is non-partisan and focuses on the advancements of the Hispanic community in Business and Economic affairs.

CHLI Congressional Board Members, Vice-Chairman Mario Diaz-Balart (FL-25), Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (FL-27), David G. Valadao (CA-21), Bill Flores (TX-17), and Raul Labrador (ID-01) all spoke about CHLI’s Global Leadership Program and the importance of the experience young leaders have interning on the Hill and in a corporate affairs office.

Congressman William Hurd (TX-23) also took the podium to thank CHLI for the internship program and gave a shout out to a former CHLI intern, Jenny Tavarez, who is now a valued staffer in his district office. CHLI was honored to have Resident Commissioner of Puerto Rico, Jenniffer Gonzalez-Colon, a new member of the 115th Congress share her commitment to the Hispanic community, specifically Puerto Ricans, throughout the country.

Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (FL-27) called up Global Leader and
current CHLI intern, Alejandra Forero, to recognize her as the future of our country.

Congressman David G. Valadao (CA-21) took the time to thank CHLI for its dedication to providing interns, not only the opportunity to work with leaders in the U.S. Congress, but with leaders in the corporate sector as well. Congressman Valadao specifically acknowledged his most recent CHLI intern, Jake Orta, who currently serves as Legislative Correspondent for Congressman Sean Duffy (WI-07).

Amongst all the recognition, CHLI honored Board Member Nathalie Rayes of Azteca America for her commitment to civic education and engagement during the Red, White Y Tú forums. Throughout the tour, Azteca America partnered up with CHLI to empower and increase voter awareness during the 2016 presidential election at universities across the country. Thanks to sponsorship from Azteca America, CHLI was able to engage with more than 210,000 individuals with its message on the importance of registering to vote and voting. 

CHLI’s President & CEO, Mary Ann Gomez Orta, presented Nathalie Rayes with a token of appreciation from the entire CHLI Board – a framed article of the Red White y Tú initiative featured in Latino Magazine. She also recognized Elaine Coronado of Argus Events & Marketing for her personal assistance in the Red White y Tú tour.
